Critical updates...

Doug

Hi,

Have a friend running Windows XP for about a year now. His system is
currently infected with the Blaster virus. I plan to go there tomorrow and
get rid of the virus for him, after updating with the appropriate patch of
course. Anyway, it seems this system hasn't been updated very often and
probably needs a lot of them. He is on a dial-up connection and I assume it
will take an eternity to download all of them. Here's my question....

I am on a cable connection and can download all the updates much faster. Is
it possible to download all of the critical updates and burn them on a CD to
install on his machine? Normally when I go to Windows Update and it scans
my computer looking for the missing updates, so how do I get all of them?
And finally, if it is possible to burn them on a CD, will the updates that
are currently on his machine be automatically overwritten or will I be
asked?

Thanks! Sorry for the somewhat lengthy questions:)

Hi

When installing a update yourself, you will usually not get a
warning that you are about to overwrite an update, but that is no
problem really, a reinstall of an update should cause no problems.

Take a look at this post on what you at least should download and
how to install on a Windows XP computer:

If you want to download other updates than the ones listed in the
link above for later installs on same or another computer, you can
use the Windows Update Catalog:

HOW TO: Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog

You and your friend might want this one as well for future use:

The free Windows Security Update CD can be ordered from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

The CD includes Microsoft critical updates released through October 2003
(and SP4 for Windows 2000 / SP1 for Windows XP) as well as information
to help you protect your PC.

Supports Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, and
Windows 98 Second Edition (SE).

wrong.
at the update site look at the installed updates. then go right from that
page to the updates catalog. the link is right on the update page. you can
then download the updates and install them offline.
I printed out my installed updates so I would have a list to download.
