Manual downloading of critical updates

Hello,
I am hoping for some advice regarding obtaining critical updates. I
used to be able to go to the MS web-site and there would be a listing
of critical and non-critical updates and I could elect which to
download. There also used to be a scan of what was missing on your
system. I have got sick of the automatic download option and have
tried a variety of options to obtain a list of the actual updates .
Below is the same MS advice obtained from the numerous links I have
tried. Oneproblem is that I don't have (or can't find) a performance &
maintenance tab.
Any suggestions are appreciated,

Bob

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or
later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet
Explorer Downloads website.

If you prefer to use a different web browser, you can obtain updates
from the Microsoft Download Center or you can stay up to date with the
latest critical and security updates by using Automatic Updates. To
turn on Automatic Updates:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or
Category, do one of the following:
* Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
* Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then
click the Automatic Updates tab.
3. Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is
not turned off.

Google is your friend... Download a utility called Belarc advisor... it will
list all the hotfixes and Updates on your PC. Then go and manually download
them from the Windows Update Catalog and save to a DVD.

To get Windows Update website working again:

1. First install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update
Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374

Direct Download links:

x86-based versions of Windows (most users)

x64-based versions of Windows

Itanium-based versions of Windows

2. Now (re)install this (updated) fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

NB: Windows Update/Automatic Updates started offering 927891 on 22 May-07.
If "Update for [Windows XP] (KB927891)" is listed in Add/Remove Programs
(make sure Show Updates box is checked), it's already installed. cf.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/927891.mspx

3. Reboot.

It’s important to note that with the MSI fix and the new client installed,
the CPU may still go near 100%, but the system should still be responsive
and not lock up. If another task requires CPU cycles they will be shared,
but if the system is idle, MSI will use the full cycles available. If a
task is running at the same time as MSI, the system may be slightly slower,
but should still be responsive during this time. Key to remember the MSI
fix and the new client address unresponsive or locked systems. CPU spikes
during some scans are expected, machine unresponsiveness is not. If your
watching the process monitor, you will still see 100% CPU during some scans
and this is expected behavior.

To configure Automatic Updates not to download or install any updates
without your permission (i.e., allowing you to select what updates you want
to install):

1. Enable Automatic Updates via Start > Settings > Control Panel > Automatic
Updates.

2. Select the third option in the list: "Notify me but don't download or
install them".

System is in the control panel area.
click the Automatic Updates tab.
3. Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is
not turned off.

The only safe way to do is automatically. Then go back in add/remove
programs with the show updates option checked. Their will be a help link
for each update, and an option to download the actual update as a file to a
place of your choosing.

A generic of downloading all updates is not only wasteful in the bandwidth
usage area, some updates may also be inappropriate for your PC.
