My automatic update keeps downloading the same update
over and over again. I've had to shut the automatic
update off. SEE BELOW (from my update history).

Hi Steve,

First, uninstall it (Control Panel/Add & Remove, it's listed as "Windows
Media Player Hotfix 828026"). Then download the stand-alone version from the
catalog option at the update site and install it that way instead. If you
don't see the catalog option, add it using personalize.

Fire up your search engine and search for catroot2, delete it or rename it
( XP will recreate it at next cold boot). Without rebooting let Windows
update run again. Reboot and problem should be fixed.
