We need to know first what your ideal machine is going to do. We can all go from there.

Be aware you will have an endless amount of suggestions ;)

You will need ...

Motherboard
CPU ... inc cooler
Memory
Hard Drive
Graphics card ... a bloody good one for games
DVDRom drive
Sound Card ... if you want something a wee bit better than MB on-built
A Monitor ... 24" look std for gamers

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/

Sundry Items
A Case to mount it all in, no, it is a sundry item to me. ;)
May/will prob need a Power Supply Unit in that case, as those generally supplied with cheap cases are detrimental to the health of your PC ... a card reader is handy if any members of the family have a digital camera.

DON'T SKIMP ON ANY COMPONENT!!!

All these bits plug into one another, can only go in their own relevant slots, press power switch, install Operating system & other software.

Enjoy!

Are you both going to be using it for gaming?

Do you have a price limit? Or anything to work toward?

Cost wise.

£600 hmm ok now people can start tinkering I guess.

Dont expect a Big Blue though mate. Not if you starting from scratch.
A decent GFx card alone could well take almost 1 quarter of that away

As for a Quad CPU I wouldnt bother unless you wanna put money toward it

Stick with a Core 2 Duo or an X2 for now

Your PSU and Motherboard are two of the most important factors. If they are stable then your system will be aswell. Take that into account

Ok. at the minute i have a 1.8ghz dual core processor, it cant even run the likes of halo 2 or medieval 2 yet it has the specs to play it.

really im looking for one that could play most of the latest shooters out and that they run smoothly.

Is your case ok? In good condition?

Is it a prebuilt system?

I got it from pc world for christmas i think 2 years ago.

The case is in good condition although i think the fan might be knackered:S, is the result of playing warcraft for too long hehe.
Also, sometime the fan is really noisy and makes a sort of pulsing sound.

Could that affect how fast it runs etc?

ok how about this below.

CPU

Motherboard

RAM

Case

PSU

HDD

GFX Card,

All that comes to £671.51.

If you could upi your budget to £800 then you could get a better graphics card. I will have another look later and see if I can chnage a few parts around to bring it back down to £600 if you cant extend your budget. What make of case do you have atm?

Let us know,

Nice choices.

I think I would reduce the spendage on the case and maybe go for a GTX+ though

Thats why i asked if he had a decent case already. That way the money saved could go on a better PSU and Graphics

Yep totally agree mate, the GFX card is more important than the case.

You can up-garde computers through it all depends on how old your pc is atm? and what current specs it has. I my self would build anther computer instead of up-grading the current one because everything is new and you dont have old parts working with new ones. Others may disagree though.

You could upgrade your machine yes

You can keep your original Hard drive, optical drive

You will need a new case, however I wouldnt buy an expensive one.
Save your money for now. U will find £600 wont go that far after buying a decent PSU and graphics card, motherboard, CPU, memory etc

The above is all I would suggest keeping really. Again that depends on the age and size of your HDD and DVD-Rom anyway

For the price of them nowadays you may decide to keep your older HDD as a backup drive and buy anewer faster quieter drive for the new system

Thought i would add my bit!
My PC is 3 years old. CPU is an AMD 3800 & the only thing i would possibly upgrade is the Graphics Card.
OK i'm not a gamer but it still does the job i bought it for.

Yes you could. But you will still be behind not matter how good the componants inside it. Yes you will save money however there is a reason. Something better has been released
