CHKDSK Results (an update)

On April 9, 2006, I posted to this form and discussed CHKDSK results I had
run on my computer. Thank you to all who replied. This posting updates my
ongoing CHKDSK-ing, the results I have received, and how my computer is
performing.

As suggested, I have run CHKDSK C: /F /R on my computer every other day
since Monday, April 10, 2006 (April 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18). The results have
been steady if unremarkable. The “unused index entries†have stopped being
reported. However, the 32 KB in bad sectors continues to show up, every
time. The “32 KB†figure never changes.

I mentioned this to a local computer geek. He said that was about the size
of one cluster. I have no idea if that’s good news or bad news.

I didn’t mention in my earlier posting, but my computer is a Dell Dimension
4550 desktop running Windows XP Home with SP-2 installed. I have 768 MB of
SDRAM. My hard drive is a Seagate 80GB (model ST380021A), with 74.4 GB
actual, 19.8 GB used, 54.6 GB free. I regularly (weekly) perform backups,
and run the following anti-X products and software: Norton Internet Security
with Firewall and also Anti-Virus, Lavasoft AdAwareSE, Lavasoft VX2 cleaner,
Spybot S&D, CWS Shredder, PC Tools Registry Mechanic, TrendMicro’s on-line
scanner, and a generic Trojan removal procedure from this web site:
http://www.claymania.com/removal-trojan-adware.html. I should also mention I
always run all these programs while in XP’s Safe Mode, with minimal drivers
loaded.

To date, since purchase and obtaining this computer (December 2002) I have
never (crossing fingers) suffered a virus or any adverse affects from
bad-stuff-ware. The only thing that ever shows up is CWS.MSConfig when I run
CWS Shredder. I remove it, of course, and immediately re-run the Shredder.
CWS.MSConfig does not re-appear…….until the next time I re-run the Shredder.
Then there is it again. Since my browser or computer do not seem to be being
hijacked, I have chalked this constant re-appearance to a false positive.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The only other computer behavior I am experiencing is in Windows Explorer.
Whenever I load a CD-ROM, a DVD, or plug in a USB thumb drive – or remove a
disk or the drive – a “Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs
to close†box appears on my screen. Shortly thereafter a “Dr. Watson
postmortem debugger†box appears. These two boxes just stay on the screen
(the computer makes no sound whatsoever) and do not just go away. I found
that to continue using my computer I must press Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the Task
Manager box to open. I click on the Applications tab, click on whatever is
indicating “Not Responding†and then click the End Task button. Here’s what
happens next: The screen behind the Task Manager will vanish and only my
desktop wallpaper, with no icons, will be showing. In time (a couple of
seconds), my icons will re-appear, along with any other applications I may
have had open. Windows Explorer DOES NOT re-appear. I close the Task
Manager box as normal: File > Exit Task Manager. The only way I have to
know what just happened is my System Tray will only have the clock and the
Volume icon. All the other icons will be gone. To get them back I must
re-boot.

Does anyone have any idea why Windows Explorer is experiencing this behavior?

As far as my hard drive and CHKDSK goes, I have noticed that Circuit City
has a nice Western Digital 160 GB on sale.

Thanks to all in advance.

32 should never changed. It was calculated during formatting.

Dr Watson is trying to tell you.
