unschedule chkdsk

How do I unschedule a scheduled chkdsk?

I scheduled chkdsk to run on a dodgy 250GB Western Digital hard drive on
start-up. After a couple of hours chkdsk completed the task and reported no
errors, but Windows never started. After half an hour I forced a reboot, but
chkdsk started rechecking the drive again.

I can't stop this lengthy chkdsk wanting to start every time I start the
computer.

Usually there is a message before chkdsk starts indicating you should push a
key if you want to skip the check.

I suggest you go to the drives manufacturer website and download their
diaignostic tool to check your hard drive. You can also find information in
the Event Veiwer (System). In the Event properties, under description is a
link which will guide you to information on how to troubleshoot the problem.

Your hardrive could be failing. When this happened this happened on my drive
it eventually failed. Checkdisk could be detecting file corruption, files
sitting on bad sectors that eventually progressed that led to failure.

Thank you for your reply. It looked like the answer. However, as always
there is a catch (22).

I can't start Windows with that drive mounted. But if I start Windows
without the disk mounted, chkntfs rejects the drive letter (that the disk has
when it is a mounted). And of course chkntfs is not listed as command from
the recovery console.

What I really want to know is the name and location of the file which
contains the scheduled chkdsk command, so that I can edit it out.

Edit the BootExecute value at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

The BootExecute value would normally only contain autocheck autochk *

That is explained in the link that ju.c gave you, you can look here for
the more of the same information:

How to Cancel CHKDSK After It Has Been Scheduled

Thank you that was exactly what I was looking for.

And apologies to ju.c. The answer was in that article as well, but I admit
I only read the section of the article that was visible on my screen, without
scrolling down.

I shall mark both replies as helpful.
