chkdsk loop

chkdsk runs every time I boot Windows XP. I try booting to safe mode.
The drivers load up then it stops. I ran fixboot and fixmbr from
Recovery Console. I edited registry from UBCD4win disk to include
'autocheck autochk*'. Ran WD tools on the hard drive. No errors found.
I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions? TIA.

Thanks for help. It suddenly occurred to me I hadn't tried 'Last
known good configuration' option after pressing F8 at bootup. Son of a
gun if it didn't fire right up. After 36 hours of screwing with this
it finally booted up. I quickly set a restore point and booted again.
Success!! Should I try that 'Dirty bit' proceedure anyway? (fsutil
dirty query x:). Thanks again.
