Changing PC's

hi all. I am going to be changing PC's soon (laptops) and the kids are
fretting that they are going to lose all their neighbourhoods they have
already saved in the game and other settings. The one they have at the
moment is set up in XP the new laptop will have Vista. Can someone explain
how to copy over all their settings onto the new laptop please so they wont
lose anything?

just copy the whole game folder to an external drive or cd etc and then you
can fall back on that .

Use the Windows Easy Transfer Utility on the Vista DVD to create a file
containing the data and settings, then run WET from inside Vista on the new
laptop to bring in the data and settings.

Make sure that original data on the old laptop is secured until you get the
data successfully transferred to the new laptop. You can connect the two
computers with an Easy Transfer cable and do the transfer that way, or
create the file on an external hard drive, CD/DVD or flash drive.

To Rock's excellent advice to use the Easy Transfer utility I would add that
you need to contact the game manufacturer(s) in question and find out how to
move saved games and such. These sometimes cannot be copied or backed up
and restored without following an exact process. Other times they can
simply be copied. It would depend on the game in question.

You can use the Easy Transfer that comes with Vista. Just open the Start orb
and look for that. You will have to follow instructions and install ET on
your XP PC but then you'll be able to copy all files and settings you need.

Hello. Thanks, I was thinking of easy transfer that's built into Vista but I
didn't know if that transfers other files or just windows files and
settings - good if it works on all files/programs though.

Thanks,

Andy.

Yes, WET transfers windows settings and user data. It does not transfer
programs. It can transfer program data.

There is an Easy Transfer Companion, that's in Beta, which purports to
transfer certain installed programs. You need to connect the two computers
by an Easy Transfer cable. I have not used it, so I can't speak to how it
works.

Laplink also offers a product. PCMover, to transfer data and programs. I
have not used that either.
