can't update directX 8.1

I have Windows XP media center service pack 3. I have tried numerous times
to download and install direct X 9 in order to use new software. It seems to
install fine, but doesn't. The DirectX diag shows the old version, 8.1, as
does the control panel for my graphics card - NVIDIA GeForece 6800. I tried
updating the driver for NVIDIA, but that didn't help. Any one got a clue?

Try run,type: DXDIAG See which version is actually on the OS..Or,install the
Direct X redistributable v9,get this at:

Unfortunately, I've already tried that. The DXDiag shows version 8.1 on my
computer. I've downloaded and thought I installed the newer version, but
it's not showing up and when i try to install video editing software that
requires DirectX9 or higher (CyberLink PowerDirector Deluxe v8) I am told I
can't do it because I don't have DirectX 9 . This is VERY frustrating!
