cant update directx 9

I cant seem to update to direct x 9 form 8.1 . I can
download the file but when it installs I get an
error . "direct x didnot copy a required file" I treid
downloading and installing 3 times . when I check direct
x diagnostics I see three errors under direct play8 1
tcp/ip provider 2 ipx provider 3 modem provider . It
still shows as directx versio 8.1 . Whern I restore to a
time befor the install there are no errors in direct x

If it still show version 8.1 then u dont need to restore
it. have u been trying to download the directX update
from microsoft's direct x page or through Windows Update.
u should be doing it though Windows Update -
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
