Can't update directx please please help me -

S

sgallano

I have no idea which forum I should post this in, I hope
I'm in the right one and apologize if I'm not. I
desperately need help. I've been trying to update my
direct x (from 8.1 to 9.0). I get an error message
stating "direct x failed to install" (paraphrase), and
this failed installation seems to have corrupted the
direct x in some terrible way, because when I load a game
that I play (Sims) there's horrible graphical corruption.
I tried downloading directx 9.0 from the directx website,
that's where I get that error message. I also tried doing
it from windows update, then it appears to install just
fine but when I run dxdiag, it says 8.1, not 9.0, so
clearly it didn't install properly. Can anyone please,
please give me some advice?
I'm tearing my hair out over this and almost ready to
resort to reinstalling xp just to get my old, uncorrupted
version of directx back.

Oh dear, what a mess.

Looks like you need to uninstall DirectX and start again.

Believe it or not, there is a tool which will allow you to do this,
called DirectX Eradicator.

I have tested this on my systems, and it works perfectly, but as always
YMMV.

The main source for this file is http://www.freewebz.com/firecat, but
his site is down ATM, so I have repackaged and mirrored it for you at:

http://tinyurl.com/pxyp

(Note: if you get a garbled mess following the above link, your browser
doesn't know how to handle RAR files properly. Instead go to:

http://www.genesis-x.nildram.co.uk/filez/

and right-click on the link for the file:

"DirectX Eradicator V1.09Beta2.rar"

Then choose "save as".

Read the enclosed "ReadMe.txt" file, as it contains additional notes.

If you don't know what a RAR files is, then you need to get WinRAR from:

http://www.rarlab.com

If I were you, I'd uninstall your graphics driver, reboot, uninstall
DirectX, reboot, reinstall DirectX, reboot, reinstall your graphics
driver (latest version) and reboot in that order.

Let us know how you get on.
