Installing DirectX 9.0 in WinXP

I have downloaded DirectX 9.0 SDK, and the install notes say to ensure
that previous versions of DirectX are un-installed else one
experiences the Black Plague.

But no earlier versions appear in my installed programs _to_ un-
install. Yet DXDiag.exe shows proper function of DirectX. Although I
cannot identify which version it is.

What to do ? Will I really experience severe violence if I don't un-
install earlier Direct X before installing the DirectX & the SDK

Do you actually want the DirectX SDK (for developers) or just the end-user
runtime (to run DirectX games for example)?

If you really want the SDK, ask in
microsoft.public.win32.programmer.directx.graphics
(though I would think you would only need to uninstall any previous SDKs,
not the runtime)

I am a software developer & have the SDK installed, but I think you need the
Feb 2007 update:
.... and ...

This would be better as it is the redistributable:

The one I have (dx90updatesdk.exe) is AFAICS, the Feb 2007 update. It
has a "Redist" folder in its expansionas well as the SDK stuff. So I
presume that both are included.

I _do_ want the SDK to get developer help info, particularly on
DirectSound..
