DirectX 9.0 incompatible with my version of XP?

I am trying to install DirectX 9.0 to play new games etc.
but every time I start the installation, I immediately
get the message 'DirectX 9.0 is incompatible with this
version of Windows' and it aborts. How can this be when I
am running XP Pro?

You might want to try the MS DirectX support center:

The incompatibility may lie in the drivers for your video card
