What's Up With DirectX 9 ?

T

Talahasee

I currently have DirectX 9.0 ( from October 1994, I
believe); I have DirectX 9b from sometime in 1995, and I
have DirectX 9c from December 2005.

I have been installing 9.0, then 9b, then 9c, so that I am
sure I have "all the updates."

* I just figured out today (for those who have NOT figured
that out, yet), that merely opening 9c doesn't install it.

Step 1 is to "open it, and choose a directory path into
which to put it."

Step 2 is to install it once it's been unzipped.

I've been picking the DirectX9 directory, but noticed the
other day a whole pack of rar s.

So today, from within DirectX9, I ran the 9c setup.

It installed just fine!

So, two questions:

1. DO I need to install 9.0, 9b, and 9c, or will 9c do? I
am assuming I need all 3.

2. Can someone please give me a list of the files 9c unzips
into? That way, I can delete those extra files from my 9.0
directory.

Or should I just leave those 'unzipped" files alone?

Thanks in advance!

DirectX 9c is included when you install Service Pack 2
for Windows XP. If you have not installed SP2, please do
so at your earliest convenience.

No, DX 9c includes all the 0. and b stuff too.

I've never had a problem installing 9c on it's own. Where did you get your
installation file from? The exe one from the MS web site will self extract
and install, or use Windows Update to install it. If you got it from
somewhere else, it sounds like someone manually zipped up the files.

I'll try this again.

Normally, when I "unzip" a zipped program from the "Install
package", I unzip it to a special folder I call "Unzipped "
(files) on my C drive.

If I unzip BobsUtilities, I'll unzip it to

c:\Unzipped\Bobs......

When I have been unzipping 9c,however, I was THINKING it was
a "clean self-install", that is, that there would be no
"left-overs", so when it asks me what my target directory
is, I have been pointing it to my DirectX9 directory. That
is, I have been having 9c unzip to the program folder.

It occurred to me only today, that I was UNZIPPING 9c, but I
was not INSTALLING it.

I then went to the DirectX9 directory (where the program
is), and did the install FROM WITHIN THE PROGRAM folder.

It installed just fine.

So I am now asking,

NOW THAT 9c is installed, which "unzipped" "pieces" can I
safely remove from the Direct X9 directory?

I don't HAVE to remove ANY of the files.

I just like to keep things neat, and I don't like "excess"
stuff left around.

(I am very anal about my computer, and I like it "clean and
tidy.")

As for where I got 9c, I download my Windows stuff from
Microsoft.

As for installing SP 2, I have had way too many issues with
it. I read recently a list of reasons that one "needs" to
install SP 2, and none apply to me.

So I am religiously attempting to avoid loading SP 2.

If I find out that I am having even MORE problems without
it, I will consider using it.

I have a persnickety machine that doesn't like a number of
things. I am one of many I know who can't use Windows Media
Player 10. I am a hard core gamer, and half-dozen of my
favorite games

Delta Force BlackHawk Down Team Sabre

and others don't run with the WMP10.

I just want my computer to work how *I* want it to work, not
that it needs to be "up with everyone else."

Since you only chose to answer one of my handful of
questions, :-(

If I choose to NOT run SP 2, do I need to install 9, 9b and
9c ?

Or is 9c sufficient?

I have a tech who could probably answer for me, but he is
VERY busy, IF I catch him.

1994 eh? Were you on the divination beta? :)

Sorry. I was in a time warp.

"2004."

Did you have any constructive advice?

(I DID enjoy your comment)

And, yes, I DO see the future! (divination).

Firstly, get Direct X 9c Redistributable - I'm not sure if this is what
you're trying to use already. It is a stand alone file that upgrades any
version of DX to the most current version. Do a Google Search- The file I
have is 33.4MB. The self-extracting exe provided is NOT an installer
package. Instead, it simply unzips the contents to a folder on your HD, at
which point of time, it is NOT installed by any stretch of imagination. Do
not select the directx folder at this point of time, since it has nothing to
do with it. Select a folder say C:\1 and unzip the files. In that folder,
now run dxsetup.exe that launches the real installer.

As for the rest of your questions:
1. You do not need to install the previous versions; in fact you
shouldn't - Since that's like installing buggy code first and then undoing
it.
2. You can delete the unzipped folder after running dxsetup.exe. (In the
above eg, delete C:\1). There are no 'extra' files.
3. The redist package is a superset of all packages, and may be installed
on any OS beyond 98SE (Haven't tried on anything older than that).

After you finish, Start>Run dxdiag
It will tell you the current DX version and a whole lot of other
information.

Everything in the extraction dir can be removed. DX9 files when installed
are all located in the Windows dir structure (mostly in the System32
folder).
