Download DirectX without automatic install???

I have an older hard drive with Windows 98SE on it that I use for an old
Umax scanner that isn't supported for W2K. When I occasionally need to scan
I swap out my W2K disk for the 98SE and do my scanning and then swap back.
So I came across the game Grim Fandango that also won't run on W2K so I
loaded it onto the 98SE drive. The problem is it needs DirectX 6 (or
later?). Now I don't have any internet software loaded on the 98SE drive.
The Microsoft site has DirectX 9c as the latest version which probably
should work except that (as far as I know) it wants to download AND INSTALL
the DirectX 9c version. So I can't do this with the non-internet 98SE. I
would like to download DirectX 9c using my W2K system write it to CDRom swap
drives to 98SE and run the install from there. So can I download a DirectX
9c from somewhere that doesn't automatically install.

Thanks,

Marv
