OT: DirectX

Posting off topic, microsoft.public.directx seems to be defunct.

I'm deciding which version of DirectX to install with a fresh install of
W2K on an old laptop (PII/266, 128M Ram).

I've been using 8.1 for some time and it seems to do everything I need.
The 9c release is considerably bigger and I'm worried that it won't run
properly on my old hardware. But I'm not sure if DirectX versions can be
compared to Application software versions wrt resource usage.

Advice?

My advice with DirectX is usually if it works don't fix it! You should
only upgrade it if you have software that is asking for it. Older
software and older hardware may not be able to make use of the newer
versions anyway.

To be more precise: "Older software and older hardware may not be able
to make use of the new "features" in newer versions anyway, even though
it may run the newer version without problems."
