CAN'T SEND MESSAGES

D

Debbie

omg...someone please help! I have Windows Vista and let me tell you, I am
about fed up with the mail system. Somehow after reading hours of messages
on here I was able to receive messages. I had Macafee and uninstalled it,
disabled firewalls, all that, verified the server address and still am not
able to send messages. I get the following error:

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'test', Account:
'(e-mail address removed)', Server: 'smtp.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '421 charter.net connection refused from [208.65.67.238]', Port:
25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

Any help is greatly appreciated. I can use webmail thru charter but creates
a problem at times when windows defaults to theirs.

Thanks!
Debbie

The error message you are seeing is not caused by anything in Windows Mail.

Charter is refusing to accept your message because you are connecting via
a different provider's network (does Grid4 ring a bell?). The general rule for
using port 25 SMTP is that the server must be owned by the network providing
your Internet connection. Are you using a laptop away from home?

The IP address in the error message indicates that you are connected to
Grid4 Communications Inc.
I don't know who that is, but Charter won't let you use the Charter email
servers because you're not connected to Charter.

"What is mail relaying and does Charter allow this practice?
Mail relaying is the practice of using Charter mail servers to send mail
(SMTP) from non Charter IP space or from domains not hosted by Charter
Communications. Relaying is not allowed by Charter. If a Charter customer is
using their laptop outside the Charter network, they should use
http://webmail.charter.net or change the outgoing mail server setting on
their mail client to match the outgoing mail server of the service provider
they are using."

Contact Charter and ask what port number to use for SMTP when not connected
to them.
