Can't send email

L

LNT1217

This is my first time using Windows Mail and for whatever reason I am not
able to send emails to people who have an office email address... The error
message reads:

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Re: ', Account: 'mail.charter.net',
Server: 'mail.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 charter.net
connection refused from [70.218.47.177]', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

Can someone please tell me how to fix this? Also, I am using Trend Micro
Antivirus.

Thanks

Is charter.net your internet provider? I did a tracert, and it looks like
70.218.47.177 connects through myvwz.com instead . If your connection
to the server crosses over from one internet provider's equipment to
another's before it reaches the server, such connections to port 25 are
often blocked to cause problems for spammers. If this is the case, you
need to ask charter.net if their outgoing mail server will accept outgoing
mail through some other port instead, and if so, where to find their
instructions for doing switching to the other port. Just trying all the
ports is a very slow way to find out, since there are about 65,000
ports available and it's unlikely that more than a few of them will accept
outgoing mail.

If you're using a wireless connection, that increases your chance of such
problems, since wireless connections have a tendency to occasionally go
through a neighbor's wireless server instead of your own, and therefore
reach the internet through your neighbor's internet provider instead of
yours.

See if this helps:

The IP address (70.218.47.177) in the error message is owned by Verizon
Wireless.
So you are connected to Verizon, and trying to send thru Charter. I'm not
familiar with either, but I suspect Charter won't let you use their email
server, since you are not connected to them.

Either use Verizon's server, or Charter's webmail, or get a Gmail account,
and use their server to send.

"What is mail relaying and does Charter allow this practice?
Mail relaying is the practice of using Charter mail servers to send mail
(SMTP) from non Charter IP space or from domains not hosted by Charter
Communications. Relaying is not allowed by Charter. If a Charter customer is
using their laptop outside the Charter network, they should use
http://webmail.charter.net or change the outgoing mail server setting on
their mail client to match the outgoing mail server of the service provider
they are using."

I am having the same problem with Embarq and godaddy.net. Any suggestions?

Oops, sorry about the blank message, girlfriend talking in the background...

Anyway, if your isp is abc.com then you will only be able to send mail
through their server if you are connected to their network at the time.

Your incoming mail server (It could be the same one) identifies you by
your name and password before letting you read your mail, your outgoing
server (the one at abc.com) cannot do this, so the only way it has to
identify you is by the fact your are connected to it's own network. If
you go to Las Vegas with your laptop you won't be connected that way.

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was 'Carol@cnalv .com'. Subject 'Windows Mail',

If that is an accurate copy of the error message, you have an illegal
space between 'Carol@cnalv' and ' .com'.
Also, that server uses port 80 instead of port 25, see
http://products.secureserver.net/email/email_outlook.htm
