Windows Mail Outgoing Message Problem

Josh

I've been using Vista/Windows Mail for a 1+ year without major problems,
however recently I've encountered a problem where I cannot send emails. I
can receive them fine, but cannot sent. I've contacted my provider, Charter,
and they said it is not their problem. There was a recent service pack
upgrade that was installed, could that be the problem? I've copied the
error message below, please help! Thanks in advance.

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Re: hello', Account:

Response: '421 charter.net connection refused from [207.118.146.29]', Port:

I ran a tracert on 207.118.146.29 and the results look like you're
connecting
to the internet using centurytel.net instead of charter.net Connections to
port 25 of a server that cross over from one internet provider's equipment
to another's before they reach the server are often blocked to cause
problems
for spammers, so you need to ask charter.net if their outgoing mail server
will accept outgoing mail through any port other than port 25, and if so,
where to find instructions for switching to the other port. Just trying all
the
ports is a very slow way to find out, since there are about 65,000 ports
available and it's unlikely that more than a few of them will accept
outgoing
mail.

See if this helps you find such information:

The error message indicates you are connecting from CenturyTel.net.
Charter will not let you use their SMTP server if you are not connected
to the Internet via Charter. Tell us the whole story, why are you
connecting from CenturyTel.net?

Hello,
Thanks for the reply.
I actually have a DSL line through Centurytel and a cable model through
Charter coming in through a router. My work installed the DSL line as a
"back up" to the Charter service in case it ever went down. I have than
added a wireless router added to that router for a lap top. Apparently when
it was installed the DSL line was added as the primary service, and not the
back up.

Hello,
Thanks for the reply. I did find out, thanks to your original reply, that
I'm using my DSL service for the connection, and not Charter.

I have 2 connections coming in through a router, as my work wanted to
install a DSL line as a "Back up" in case Charter was ever to go down.
Apparently, they installed it incorrectly, as I'm using the DSL connection as
my provider instead of Charter. Not sure if there is something I can do
without reconnecting all of the the cables?

Thanks again

Well, you will either have to make Charter the primary Internet service,
or else change your SMTP server to the one provided by your DSL
service.
