cant add printer

Everytime I try to add a printer, hp2300 , even as a local printer, I get a
spools.exe application error, then it tells me it cant add the printer.
what can I do here

Do you have antivirus? When Print Spooler service crashes, the print
subsystem is unavailable.

Yes, symantec corp 8.0
Upon further review we discovered we only have a problem when we try to load
the hp laserjet 2300. When we try, it takes down the print spooler.
This was a recent upgrade from win98 which had the hp2300. I think I may
need to wipe it clean and do a fresh install. ANy opinions welcome
