I have gotten this same error message and tried the suggestion below, and it
didn't work. Any other suggestions?

Try this:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Contacts". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

If no improvement, I suggest upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

If you want help, describe your issue in detail.
Do not assume you have exactly the same problem as someone else.

I have read a lot of your replies and you are not very helpful sometimes.
Is the job getting you down.

I had the can't find contacts problem because I moved the Contacts folder
accidentaly. It does appear to be a reference issue in the registry. I
followed bhushen's advice and that fixed it.

As you are the expert I expect you to home in on the real issue but you seem
unhelpful with some of your replies. It seems logical that its a referencing
issue but I was surprised that Windows didn't look in it default user
location as an alternative. I am also surprised they wrote the software such
that no contacts stops the programme running - messy.

I still have to get contacts to run from Windows Live. Anything helpful to
offer, if its not too much trouble.

Sorry if you perceive me to be unhelpful at times.
This is not a job. All the responders are unpaid volunteers.

If by "Windows Live" you mean the Windows Live Mail email program,
this is not the right place to get help. The newsgroup to which you
posted is dedicated to supporting the Windows Mail program.
You will get more help for Windows Live Mail here:

or via your news reader: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

Thank you for posting this solution. I accidentilly moved the contact list to
my external hard drive and it has taken me almost 3 days to find this
solution. Now it works normal again.
