On your hard drive navigate to C:\Users\{username}\Contacts. Rename that
Contacts folder to something else. Restart Windows Mail. If that works, you
will need to re-import your contacts.

been at it all day tried various suggestions from this site even live mail
not working

By "live mail" you mean a program called Windows Live Mail that you
downloaded from http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview ?

Is the error message in Windows Live Mail identical to the error
message you got in Windows Mail? If different, please post the
complete error message.

Have had the same problem .
I've been able to solve the problem by modifying the following KEY
HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\user shell
folders\{56784854-C6CB-462B-8169-88E350ACB882} and setting the actual
contacts folders

I've had the same problem running Vista Home Premium, changed Contacts to
another name, didn't work. When looking thru explorer I see that I don't
have a winmail.exe file..... Help.

BTW, when I tried to restore I can't go back past the time when the problem
started. I have McAfee which I deleted. My mail worked fine for 8 months
then the problem started as stated below by other post.

Any other ideas aside from windows live?

What exactly "didn't work", and how did it fail to work?

The program file WinMail.exe should exist in the folder
C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\

How did you "delete" McAfee? Be sure to use the uninstall option,
then follow it up by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

There is a big difference between deleting and uninstalling.

Removing the contacts didn't work, in other words, did not fix the problem as
stated below. I went to add & remove programs and uninstalled McAfee. That
didn't help the problem as stated below. The winmail.exe file does not exist
in the folder C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\ on my computer which is running
Vista Home Premium.

The problem I'm referring to is:
I would really like to be able to use Outlook... please help.
Thanks,
Hollie

Again I ask, after you uninstalled McAfee, did you follow it up by using
their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

If not, be sure to do so now.

As for WinMail.exe being missing, try this:
Right-click on your Windows Mail shortcut, select Properties, what does
it show for the Target path? Click on "Open File Location". Does it go
to WinMail.exe?

You said "I would really like to be able to use Outlook."
You want to use Outlook rather than Windows Mail???

Hey Gary, the link for the debris removal tool doesn't work, so no I did not
use it.
I do not have a shortcut icon for my winmail, only in the start menu & I
can't get to properties from there. I did right click and explore my OS and
could not find the winmail.exe file.

I did go to Windows Mail and signed up for an account but since I can't get
my contacts it's not really helping (still getting the "contact failed to
load"). I really need some of my old emails for important information and do
not know how to access them from Windows Mail. I have a gmail account and
love it online, it's just the info filed in my Outlook that I need.

Thanks for your help, Hollie

I'm so sorry if I have you as confused as I am. when I click on the start
button I go to the E mail icon that says "Windows Mail" under it. Then I
have the problem as stated below:

contacts failed to load the application was unable to initalize the windows
and I can't get to my Outlook. I'm going to try to link you sent me to
remove the debris that may be left from McAfee.

Thanks for all your patience.. Hollie

I still don't know what you mean by "can't get to my Outlook".
There is a big difference between the Outlook program and the
Windows Mail program.

Seeing that your Windows Mail program seems to be badly corrupted,
my only remaining advice is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

Windows mail Error

Hi, my name is Marvin
i just wanna share exactly the same problem with guys
i followed all the steps how to fix the windows mail,
but nothing worked.
I'm not expert in computers but then i started thinking,
that sometimes i share my computer with my brothers and i found out
that one of them have moved just one of my files out of place,
which was the "CONTACTS" in my documents, so as soon as i put it back
where it used to be and opened my windows mail started working.
So make sure that you have the contacts file in the right place.
hoping this solves your problem.

How do you get to the place where you modify
KEY HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\user shell
folders\{56784854-C6CB-462B-8169-88E350ACB882}
Can't remember.
Many thanks.
