the second pop up says windows mail could not be started.the application was

Look to see if there are ESENT errors in Event Viewer. See if they are
error 5. If so, then you have permissions issues with the Mail store
directory and you need to fix those. Try booting to Safe mode as
Administrator and then take ownership of the directory and reset the
permissions on it.

It sounds as if you may have more serious problems though.

You can try deleting the database or moving all the files out of the message
store directory and then see if it works.

that is illegal. You can't distribute Windows files.

If you think a file is corrupt then use system file checker to fix it.

I am new here--so sorry I am not using it correctly--how do I get the "to"
fields in composing email messages to look like the list in contactts? I
have the contacts arranged the way I want them to appear-- but the
"TO/BCC/CCC" fields look different-- it's hard to find the names I want

Just download Thunderbird and set it as your mail default and you won't have
to use Windows Mail and you won't have the problem.

I had the same problem, and I followed this.

Thing is, I've never used Windows Mail even once and these messages started
popping up out of nowhere right when I log in.

Anyone have any suggestions? It's starting to get on my nerves.

I have had the same problem - go to user profile and turn off the access
control option, reboot. It has worked for me - when its on Windows mail won't
open - when its off it does - may be a coincident - but it worked for me, so
I thought it might work for you.
