I have just installed ntback for xp home. when I get to screen to start back up, it comes up with (the backup file name could not be used. please ensure that it is a valid file path and that you have sufficient acess)
Path name is D:\backup 30-07-04.
I have admin access. I am trying to back up to a DVD+R disc.

NTBackup will not recognise a CD/DVD burner as a valid backup device. You
have two options:
Either specify the XP CD Recording folder as your backup location and then
burn to CD, or get a backup application that will allow you to backup
directly to CD/DVD

Not computer literate, how do I specify xp cd recording as back up location, also do you know of any back up applications that will back up to cd/dvd.

Nero Backup will. If you don't want to buy third-party software (the
best solution, really), then just make a new folder somewhere useful,
like on your C: drive and call it "backup". Have NTBackup backup to
that folder and then manually burn the data to a cd-r/dvd.

I was told that you can't burn directly to a CD or DVD disk with XP but
after a long period of help from user groups I was recently informed that XP
had packet writing software included and it was necessary to format the
disk. I did this and can now us XP backup to directly burn to my CD RW disk
and subsequently do a differential backup.
The experts are still not convinced but I assure you that it works
Just format your disk first. Worth a try!

If you've got packet writing software in your copy of XP, it was
either installed by a third party application or carried over by an
upgrade from your previous OS. XP does not include packet writing
software. Whoever "informed" you of that is wrong.

NTBackup does not work with CD/DVD. It is purely tape oriented, and I
think was included just for old NT users bringing their tapes forward.
You can make a backup with it onto Hard disk and then copy that to DVD,
or you can install one of the 'Packet writing' burning packages , Direct
CD/InCD/DLA which will allow it to use such a disk as output medium,
but it will not 'span' over a series. Better look for a third party
solution.
