problem backing up in xp pro

The back up file name could not be used

If what is showing above is the path and file you key for backup, then you
are missing the colon between the d and backslash.

Also what is the D: drive? If it's a CD, ntbackup cannot backup to CD
unless 3rd party burning software is installed, and even then will only
write to one CD - it cannot span CDs.

not being able to back up to a cd; what purpose does backup serve? to back up
to floppies!!
Cannot Microsoft invest a little money into making a utility they offer work
with 20th century technology? I wasted about 3 hours fiddling around with it
trying to get it to work

D:\ on my HP m1050y is set aside for the recovery partition and cannot be
accessed at all except in the need for recovery.

NTBackup was written for tape drive units. Believe it or not, lots
and lots of servers still write to tape (such as DAT) using NTBackup
or other software. It is cheaper and much easier to use than CD
media, since one tape can hold an entire backup set and I can automate
it to run while I'm asleep, instead of having to be at work swapping
CDs.

Ntbackup is a legacy app from NT. It works well for backups to tape
units, internal and external drives and network drives. If you want CD
support use a drive imaging program such as Norton Ghost or Acronis True
Image, or a "traditional" backup program similar to ntbackup but with
CD/DVD support. One such is Stompsoft's Backup MyPC.
