Windows XP Back up

Hi All,
I'm trying to back up my HD with the Windows XP Pro Back up program. I want
to save the data to a CDRW disk, but the program keeps giving me an error.
It says the the back up file name could not be used. "D:\backup.bkf" "Please
ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access." Can anyone
help me?

Thanks

Native XP backup program can not burn direct to CD. I would try to
backup to a folder on hard disk and burn to CD with burning
application.
Alternativelty there are third party backup utilities which can burn
directly to CD. I'm quite pleased with DFinc backup which uses zip
format so users do not have to locate a Winxp machine to access the
files in the backup (any machine with winzip installed would work) and
is freeware for personal use.

The Backup program that comes with Windows XP is unable to burn directly to
an optical device like a CD-R/W or DVD. Hence the warning message you are
seeing. See here for possible work-around
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/saving_files_to_cd.htm You should be advised
that even if you use a work around the Backup program is very limited. For
example it can't split a file into segments so any backup larger than 650 MB
(in the case of CD-R/W) can't be burned directly to CD. You may wish to look
at a decent third party alternative to creating backups if you plan to store
then on CD. If you plan to use the XP Backup program then look into getting
an external USB Hard drive.

I have been having the same problem with backup. How do I figure out the
size of the external USB hard drive I would need. Can you use a USB stick?

The size of the backup will be limited to the size of the USB stick.
Remember that the Backup program that ships with XP can not split files or
span discs. That means it can't span USB sticks either.
