When I try to use ntbackup, I get the following message: "The backup file
name could not be used. (File name attempted.) Please ensure it is a valid
path, and that you have sufficient access." I am an Administrator user, and
am trying to save to CDs (drive D:\). (Sample of unusable path: D:\maybackup)
Please help.

You cannot use NTBACKUP to write to CD/DVDs directly/innately.
You have to write somewhere else and then you can burn it to CD/DVD if you
want.

Ntbackup cannot write directly to CDs unless packet writing software is
installed, and then it will only write to a single CD. Create the
backup file elsewhere and burn to CD later.

The fact that NTBK does not burn to CD's is another reaon to get a reliable
third party software. The important thing is that you do not let this issue
deter you from backing up regularly. Automatic shceduling is a great way to
comply with a backup policy. I use Norton Ghost because it seems do work
quickly and it has an image browser perfect for my needs.

Worth repeating: The important thing is that you do not let this issue
deter you from backing up regularly.

What does everyone else use?

WinXP's NTBackup does not recognize CDRs or CDRWs as valid backup
media. By design, it will only write back-ups to tape drives or
another physical or logical hard drive. Many people back-up to a
spare hard drive, and then burn the resulting file to a CD, as a
work-around. Another option, of course, is to use a 3rd party backup
solution.
