You cannot backup to CD/DVD using the native tools.

You can't backup on a CD/DVD drive. So you will have this problems.

To backup, you will need USB hosted HD or flash drive.

Thanks for your help. I have no idea what those things are I need, but I will
look into it! Since I went to the trouble of installing backup, could you
tell me what it actually does? Seems like backing up should be a pretty easy
thing to do...

That error occurs because you're trying to backup to CD or DVD.
Ntbackup cannot backup to DVD. It can backup to a single CD if 3rd
party packet writing software is installed, however it cannot span CDs.
One option is to create the backup on the hard disk, then burn it to
CD/DVD.

Another option is to use a different type of backup solution. One such
option is a drive imaging program. This makes an exact image of the
partition which can be saved on CD/DVD or to another drive - internal or
external. Imaging to an external USB 2.0 / Firewire drive works well.
Then occasionally burning an image to DVD gives you redundancy.
Restores can be done of the entire partition or individual files /
folders. These work well and make it easy to recover from a drive crash.
Examples of this are:

Norton Ghost 10
Acronis True Image
Terabyte Unlimited's Image for Windows
CasperXP

The second option is a traditional backup program such as Stompsoft's PC
BackUP or Sonic’s Backup MyPC. They are good tools. - and the evolution
of ntbackup. There are other good backup programs out there as well.
This can do a complete backup or backup individual files and folders to
DVD/CD and other drives.

Yes Nancy, backing up is very simple. What you really need to do is
copy your own documents on a CD (NOT BACKUP as you seem to understand).
Do you know how many files do you normally create in week? These are
all your files you use such as Word, Email etc.

All you own documents are in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My
Documents where USERNAME is your own name.

You can copy the entire folder on to your CD once a week by dragging and
dropping.

Outlook file (email files) are in:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

WinXP's NTBackup does not recognize CDRs, CDRWs, or DVDWs as valid
backup media. By design, it will only write back-ups to tape drives or
another physical or logical hard drive. Many people back-up to a spare
hard drive, and then burn the resulting file to a CD, as a work-around.
Another option, of course, is to use a 3rd party backup solution.
