Just wondering if anyone has used this anti-virus program and if so did you
have any problems with E-mail or anything else?

I use it, with Pegasus...never had any problems with it, or in
conjunction with any other program.

Great program

I use it on all of my computers. No problems except the occassional
slow connection to download updates.

Ditto. Highly recommended.

Updating often fails, probably because the update servers become overloaded.
Apart from that AVG has been OK in my book. I eventually dumped it for
Avast!, though.

I seem to have a more serious issue with updates - even when downloaded,
they won't install. I even tried uninstaling and downloading the most recent
version but it won't install properly - the old one will reinstall without a
problem, though. Unfortunatly, being limited in how many Mb I can download
in a month, I hav't had the capacity to try redownloading it etc.

Use it since version 6 (now 7), connections aren't so bad during
updating... though there may be a "traffic jam" at the servers when you
get the complete package updated (like last week). Usual update size is
between 50 and 225 KB, if you're on broadband make sure to set the
update manager to check for updates daily.

The program is good, caught here quite a number of viruses (whole
strains of Sobers). Use it in combination with FoxMail

I use it but with the e-mail scanner disabled as the mail scan
interferes with MailWasher when I attempt to check the mail server.

I share your opinion :
AVG : often slowish updates, clear interface
Avast : quick and automated updates, very unclear to me interface

I actually like the Avast! interface. Mostly because it stays out of the way
until something actually happens.

The biggest drawback of Avast! vs AVG the way I see it is resource
consumption.

I used AVG for a couple of years, but when they brought out
version 7, I found myself having problems updating, so finally I
switched to Avast.

We then disagree : most antivirus software remain silent and
discrete until something dangerous happens ; so does Avast, so does
AVG. Considering the interface, I just cannot understand how the
look of an antivirus can be the same as the one of a mediaplayer
which, to me, seems to be the case with Avast.

I have the reverse problem. I am using both AVG and Avast. AVG downloads
automatically and updates the definitions without any hitch. I have been
unable to find the Avast update program to allow in my firewall. I have
given permission to the firewall (Outpost) to allow ASWUPSW.EXE and
ASHWEBSV.EXE to access the Avast servers, but it appears that there is
some other additional executable that downloads the updates. I am unable
to find it. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Same here. It does not work with my Japanese mailreader, so I have
disabled its mail component. Works splendidly otherwise.

Hi Mike,

And if you download the update file from either Grisoft or Major Geeks,
does it refuse to update still (save the file in your "Downloads"
directory, start the update manager manually (it should ask for the
location of the update, check the "File"option, point the program to it
and let it go...)

Hi!

Open Outpost, have a look at the "Blocked Traffic" while updating, that
would show additional program modules that would want to access the
Internet...

Hi Dick,
Open Outpost, have a look at the "Blocked Traffic" while updating, that
would show additional program modules that would want to access the
Internet...

I did that too. It showed a component called Avast.Setup but I am unable
to locate this component anywhere in the Avast folder. A search for the
file from Windows Start menu also does not show an Avast.Setup file.

Can anybody using a firewall with Avast let me know what file Avast uses
for updates and where such a file resides?

Thanks,

I am using Avast! and Outposf firewall (OT) too and the antivirus
update process works flawlessly. I have set up Outpost in "Rules
wizard" mode and when Avast!, after installation, first needed to
connect to the net to update I checked what Outpost suggested as
preset rules and then accepted those suggestions : afair, browser
rules for "ashwebsv.exe", and email client rules for "ashmaisv.exe".
