AVG Question?

Antoine,
Thanks for response.

I am using Avast! and Outposf firewall (OT) too and the antivirus
update process works flawlessly. I have set up Outpost in "Rules
wizard" mode and when Avast!, after installation, first needed to
connect to the net to update I checked what Outpost suggested as
preset rules and then accepted those suggestions : afair, browser
rules for "ashwebsv.exe", and email client rules for "ashmaisv.exe".

When I start the Avast update, Outpost shows that the program that is
blocked from accessing the update server is Avast.setup

I cannot find this file. Do you have this file in your Avast program
folder? Can you check in Outpost what application is accessed when you
update Avast?

Thanks in advance.

The same here. Note that "Avast.setup" is the application's name ;
it is not necessarily the name of one of the executable files which
is concerned.

Here is an excerpt of the Outpost's log illustrating what happens
when Avast gets updated :

When I navigate to wherever I have saved the download, AVG seems unable to
find the update file at all ("There is no new update"). Really annoying.
Over the last 2 months I have used approaching 40Mb of my internet allowance
on failed updates. I searched the AVG site for help and they reccommended
deleting a subfolder in the AVG folder - I forget the name - but even with
hidden and system files displayed, the folder does not exist anywhere on my
system.
When I attempt to download from the internet, the file partially
downloads and installs before ending the process with an error message
"Update file is damaged. Please use other Update File" or something along
those lines. I get a similar error message when I uninstall, reboot, and
attempt to install a newly-updated version of the software.
It's reaching the point where I'm starting to suspect that some
malicious code has gotten through my defences and disabled the damn thing,
because I'm also unable to update the Java virtual machine (again, an error
message and the process aborts). Or maybe it's Windows (or one of it's
updates) that's fouled up.
Any assistance gratefully accepted.

<snip>

Thank you for posting an excerpt of the log. I may be dense, but I still
couldn't find the application that is blocked. svchost.exe is a Windows
module; I can't find avast*.setup which seems to be the file that
communicates with the server.

I now disable the firewall and then download the updates manually.
Sigh :(

I haven't got any file named 'avast.setup' on my system either ;
this is just the _application_'s name requesting a connection not
the executable file.

Sigh :(

I suggest the following :

1) In Outpost > Options > Application, withdraw every executable
related to Avast : here, there are 2 : "ashwebsv.exe",
"ashmaisv.exe" but they may be more if you have manually added some
rulesf for some other executables.

2) If not already, switch Outpost in "Rules wizard mode"

3) Force Avast to update and watch how Outpost reacts : an Outpost
connection detection window should pop up and let you configure the
rules.

If this doesn't work, I can't be of any further help :/

This did work! Now, why didn't I think of the Rules wizard? I normally
got Options and allow certain applications; never thought about Rules
wizard.

After I did what you suggested, Avast has registered this in the allowed
applications: Avast.Setup

Thanks a lot, Antoine!

Hi Mike,

Hmm... that is very odd! Now, can you tell me the structure of \Program
files\Grisoft\AVG Free?

I had a clean install back then, and there is absolutely no subfolder
in the AVG7 program directory here.

What is your OS, and connected with that: the file system on your
drive(s)?

Hi Dick,

I did that too. It showed a component called Avast.Setup but I am
unable to locate this component anywhere in the Avast folder. A
search for the file from Windows Start menu also does not show an
Avast.Setup file.

Can anybody using a firewall with Avast let me know what file Avast
uses for updates and where such a file resides?

Thanks,
Gururaj Rao

Hello Gururaj,

It might be the same problem Kazaa users are facing when they want to
allow that program through a firewall like Outpost: By default Outpost
looks for executable (exe) files when adding an application. So your
Avast.Setup could be present, you'd never see it in Outpost's "Add
Application" screen. There is a little trick though I used for people
who did want to allow non-standard named executable program moule
through Outpost: enter "*.*" (without the quotes) in the "File Name"
field on the "Add Application" screen in Outpost, then click the
button, and you should see everything in that folder, if the
Avast.Setup module is there, just select it by double clicking,
determine the level of rights it should have (download manager would be
a good one to try), then continue as usual when adding an application.

Hi Mike,

And if you download the update file from either Grisoft or Major Geeks,
does it refuse to update still (save the file in your "Downloads"
directory, start the update manager manually (it should ask for the
location of the update, check the "File"option, point the program to it
and let it go...)

Dick

Something messed mine up (corrupted it - IAW the pop-up message) and I had to
re-install it.
I first had to uninstall the old version. Then went to their site and dl'd the new
version. Perhaps
the OP could try that. The new version doesn't take as long to install as the old
version did and
also you don't have to wait for an e-mail with the registration number. They put it
right on the
screen with the new install. Great program. I've used it for three years without an
problems..

I share your opinion :
AVG : often slowish updates, clear interface
Avast : quick and automated updates, very unclear to me interface

AVG = quick updates here. Never had any sluggishness with it. No reason to change.
I'm also using Symantec..corp version. No conflicts, no problems. AVG set to auto
update,
Symantec I do manually.

Yeah! LOL! version 7.0.322 virus base 266.11.16 22 May 2005 Thanks. ;)
Keep trying, you'll get it right one day. LOL!
The main point, of course, being there was a recent update (whatever
the version/database numbers!). :o)

Try the Windows\Grisoft directory.

Well, for Avast, you have three choices:
First, you can custom install him without skins (few MB less on HD)
second, you can disable skin support in settings, or you can choose, for
instance, KDE skin, which is very nice.

The directory structure is C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7. No
subfolders.Which is why the advice is so strange.
Operating system is Win98SE, HD format is FAT32.
