Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not fully compatible
with Windows Mail. Make sure the antivirus is not configured to scan
emails.

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing up.
First of all, turn off email scanning in McAfee, although that is seldom sufficient.

If the problem continues, the only way you can prove or disprove that
McAfee is the culprit is to uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of overly intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:

Sorry, hunting down viruses is not my area of expertise.
Google on "online virus scan" and try all the free ones from
reputable companies. If none of them will do the job, it means
your system is badly infected, and you will need to reinstall Vista.

The problem is solved by uninstalling IE8. Just did it and can open all
attachments again no problem. My advice is to uninstall IE8 and wait for the
bugs to be fixed. As usual

I just bought my Inspiron 1545, and am experiencing the same problem. Tried
many things, and nothing worked. Not being able to open the attachment is
really annoying. I am using ESET antivirus, but I suspect it may not have
anything to do with this or other antivirus systems. Can it be a bug with
Windows Mail????
Please look into this because so many people are having the same problem!
Thank you!

It could be a bug with the combination of WinMail and IE(.

To say mire we would have to know:

1.) Do you have IE8 installed?

2.) Are you unable to open *all* types of attachments or just some types
of files?
Which file types do not work?

3.) Which error messages do you receive?
(Pls give the exact wording).

I had a problem with attachments in email which wouldn't open. The solution
which worked for me is to save the attachment as an attachment. Then open the
attachment which has been saved and it now opens perfectly. When the
attachment is opened by the correct program which recognizes the file format
it will open. One of the examples I had was a wmv file which I saved as an
attachment and saved in documents ( the default ) and opened by Windows media
player. By the way I'm running a 64 bit Vista operating system on an
Inspiron. 6 GB of memory. If the attacment is of a different file format
for instance a word file the same applies only it opened by Word. I'm also
running Mcafee antivirus which came installed on the computer and I changed
nothing in that program or any internet options.

I hope this helps. Give it a try.

computer now seems to have a mind of it's own and I can not control what it
wants to do..I do not use norton or mcAfee, I am not fans to these antivirus
protection...so I am sking u now what do I do to be able to see the
attachments I am recieving...this is not cool at all to me kind of pees me
off to be exact to have nothing wrong new download and now I can not see what
I am getting in my in box...sure hope they r not working on a new windows

I have had an intermittent problem where I am unable to open
attachments (JPG files) when using Vista mail. This started after I
upgraded to IE8. I am running Vista Ultimate x64 and Avast security.
The error message I get is "Windows cannot find xxx.jpg"

The last 3 times this happened I was able to solve the problem by
deleteing my temporary internet files. Once I did that I was able to
open the attached JPG file. The problem keeps reoccuring however.

I recently received the "command failed to execute" message when I tried to
open an attachment on an e-mail that I had previously opened w/o problems.
Why is this? And what do I do to be able to open the attmnt once again?

That's exactly what I have on 4 systems.
It may work for a while after deleting the "Content.IE5" files or
relocating the TIF. But it will re-appear at least on the next day.

How about TXT-files?

Interestingly, MSN Explorer users are reporting the same issue
after installing IE8. One workaround (not recommended) is to turn
off Vista's UAC.

The suggestion is not of help for WinMail.
Turning off UAC does not make a difference in my system.
