The Command failed to execute

This problem started yesterday after downloading IE8, I went ina d changed
the security setttings like advised in an earlier question. This solved the
problem and worked yeasterday. Today when I try and open attachments it gives
me the error "The command failed to execute" again. I have checked he
security settings and reset the Internet settings. Still can't open
attachments. What will resolve this issue?

I have the same problem. I downloaded IE8 the other day and then I was unable
to open the attachments in Windows Mail and received the same error message
you describe. I rebooted my PC and it solved the problem but only
temporarily, today I am back to square one and a reboot no longer helps.

Reviewing past messages for those that had this problem it does not look too
promising for the most part that this will be easily resolved. I recently
upgraded to Vista and like Windows Mail, sorry I jumped the gun to try IE8
since I prefer Foxfire, guess there is no turning back and I may just revert
to Thunderbird if this matter is not resolved soon.

this is pure BULLS**T on Microsofts part. This is a problem with IE8, and
they should have a patch out before now. They truly are Darth Vader.

Go to default programs, either from the start menu or in Control
Panel>Set your default programs>wait for the list of programs to
populate>select Windows Mail and ensure that it is set as default.

Select Internet Explorer and do the same.

Also while in the Default Programs, click on "Set program
access and computer defaults." Select Custom, and
then select Internet Explorer. Then Windows Mail & Click OK.

Dear HTH, Your solution sounded good but it didn't work for me. Not only can I not open some attachments, IE8 will not permit display of .jpg items. About the same time that I installed IE8, I also began experiencing problems opening previously generated documents in MS Word 2007; citing that macros had not been previously allowed. Grady

This appears to have fixed the proble, at least for the moment. One thing,
after setting Windows Mail and IE8 ( IE7 came up in the programs, not IE8) as
defaults, when I went to "Set program access and computer defaults" and
clicked on the "custom" button, it just went away. There was no new box which
would allow me to select anything. From your post, I expected a new selection
opportunity after selecting "custom" and clicking "OK". BUT as I sad, WM
seems to be opening attachments just fine now. Here hoping it continues!!!

Pls avoid MS-bashing which is good for nothing!!

As to my experience it *might* be a problem related to IE8, it may it
might be not.

I had the problem in two if my machines under Vista and only on those
two, not on any others being configured with the same pattern. And it
appeared only when running under my *personal* user-profile. No problem
with the other profiles in the same machines.
So guess what ...

The problem could be solved be deleting the directory for the temporary
file used by IE and - as I had to find out the hard way - by WinMail
too.

If you still have the problem, delete
"%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5"
and the problem should be cured.

Hi Grady

I had the problems on two machines.
After extensive experimenting I could finally solve it by deleting the
file where the temporary files form IE and WinMail are stored:
"%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5"

The file was re-created automatically by IE and now all types of
attachments can be opened.

Try it out and pls report back.

I had the same problem after installing IE8. I tried all of the suggestions
here, but none of them worked. What DID work was creating a restore point
back to a date before installing IE8 and I am now back to IE7. Able to open
email attachments as before.

Thanks a lot for your confirmation that these problems do exist!!

Meanwhile quite some of my - meanwhile rather spare - hair has been
offered.
What *I* have is a situation like hell.

I want to keep to using WinMail (but the resolution of attachments is
severely broken since IE8).
And no restore point left over for reverting to the previous version of
the browser ....

you can also install windows live mail. It's basically the same but more
compatible with vista. Even though I got restored everything to where it was
before installing IE8, i went with that mail prog as well. And if all else
fails, there's the last resort of running your recovery disk, but that's a
"last resort". Unless yours lets you reinstall certain programs, you usually
lose anything you've installed.

There should be a restore point to a time before you installed IE8. I know I
had to go back about a week and a half. But before you resort to the
recovery, try live mail. You can always uninstall it if it doesn't help.

Thanks for trying to help.

I take the liberty to disagree.
LiveMail is anything but "basically the same".
Tried it, but did not keep it.
Should I be forced to give up WinMail when moving to Win7, I'd rather
make the move to Thunderbird or something else.
For sure LiveMail will not an instrument I'd use for my daily work with
mail and news.
Even though I got restored everything to

This is not of no help.
I do not have any "Recovery Disk" and never used anything of that sort.
I restored the system from an image of the system-partition and work
under IE7 again.

As said, LiveMail is a no-go for me.
And restoring from a restore point (not being an option as there was no
restore point from ante IE8 left over when the problem appeared) also
would not help to solve the incompatibility problem.

Thanks anyhow

Well guys, I managed to delete IE 8 and returned to IE 7. Astoundingly, I
was able to open all the attachments that I had not been able to open the
last month or so. That was yesterday; today, the problem returned. Do you
suppose it is an inherent problem with Vista???

If it was a general Vista problem, you'd see many more complaints about it here.

Try uninstalling your antivirus.

I'm sure that it's not a problem of Vista.
I have been working for 1 1/2 years with Vista and WinMail and there
never was problem with attachments.
And uninstalling IE8 caused that the problem went away.

Did you perhaps not completely uninstall IE8?

Which way did you "delete"(as you say) IE8?

Did you follow the instructions from MS step by step?

Did you empty the Temporary Internet files?

pls also see at end.

Sorry, obviously I did not reply to your question.

As the folders have the "system" and "hidden" attributes they can not be
seen in the Windows Explorer. In needs an alternative file-manager.

What I had said about removing the files was not valid, as turned out
later.
When the folders are removed the system re-creates them automatically.
And the problems re-appear a while later.

Dear Rainald, et. al.,

No, I did not empty the Temp Int. File prior to uninstalling IE8. I was
sure tho, that it was uninstalled because it seemed that my computer perked
up and I was able to open many attachments. But as reported, the next day, I
could not open any attachments.

So. I emptied the Temp. Files and then attempted another IE8 installation.
While in process, I got the msg that a later version of IE 8 was already
installed and that this installation was thereby halted. Going back to Win
Mail, I found that I could open all attachments. However, after awhile, it
reverted back to not opening any attachments.

I tried shutting down Win mail and rebooting operations. After each reboot,
I was able to open attachments but it seemed to be limited to THREE before
subcumbing to not opening them at all!!

Reflecting back, I have tried all suggestions from this post and others.
All suggestions seem to work momentarily before reverting back to the
not-working condition. It almost works like a virus that is timed by number
of successful operations or on a time-basis.

It would seem to me that Microsoft would be interested in this problem since
it seems so widespread. Does anyone know how one can talk to the applicable
Microsoft group and get a most perplexing problem fixed???

I do not fully understand the situation.
As above quoted you said that you die uninstall IE and retuned to IE7.
Which version of IE are the additional remarks referring to.

It may be a bit more than just 3 times.
The worst culprit is JPG.

I too would like to be able to report to MS in order to make them aware.
