The Command failed to execute

I've had the same issue as Grady for some time now. Both in Windows Mail and
Windows Live Mail. I never installed IE 8.

Please post the exact error message you get.
Also, which antivirus are you running?

Gary, you last suggested that I un-install my anti-virus and so I did.
Eureka, I was able to open several day's attachments and I though I was on my
way to recovery. But, alas, the same message returned the next day.

Go to Tools | Internet Options in Internet Explorer and delete the files.
See if that helps.

Are you running without any antivirus? Except for brief tests,
I don't recommend that. If you have re-installed an antivirus, let
us know which one.

Hi, Gary. I just got a Toshiba laptop and was e-mail attaching photos, from
iPhoto on my Apple, so I could save them into Window Photo Gallery and then
into my Family Tree Maker software. Worked fine for 50 or so photos- and
then the nefarious Command started to come up- and now I get it even when I
re-try earlier attachments that opened OK. So....has anybody found a
solution yet? Or know where to get one?

Thanks.

No solution except installing IE8.

And there is a workaround reducing the problems to JPG and TXT files:

Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail. Select
Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

P.S. Not forget the basic workaround: Save the attachments to a folder
and then open them from there

Another person, named Silverhawk, came up with the correct solution (in a
different thread). It appears that an automatic update of Windows Mail
caused the link used to open Windows Mail to not work properly. Delete the
link, and then create a new one from the basic program in the Start "All
Programs" menu. Here's how Silverhawk describes it:

I noticed that if I start windows mail from
the IE8 browser, then it appears to work ok. But if I start windows mail from
the start menu, that is when I have problems. With that all said. I went to
the start menu and removed the shortcut from the start menu, then I went to
the applacation source and started the program from there, and tried it again.
And everything seems to be working fine. I then re-pinned it back into the
start menu.

Rainald promulgated that partial fix quite some time ago. The fix is
only partial, because it doesn't help with JPG and TXT attachments.

It only *SEEMS* to work.
What's dine this way is nothing else but my workaround (often posted by
Gary) to edit the "Start in:" path in the standard shortcut.

Mist types if files will work. But the problem is persistent with JPG
and TXT files.
Try these.
You may send a test mail with TXT and JPG attachments to yourself.
Test it several times, the problem may take a while until it appears.

I agree... and I got a 64-bit machine which is the ebola virus of Microsoft
software. It's like they took XP and drilled a bunch of holes in it. I
should have listened to my wife and bought a Mac, here's to reformatting and
switching to Linux.....

This appears to have fixed the proble, at least for the moment. One thing,
after setting Windows Mail and IE8 ( IE7 came up in the programs, not IE8)
as
defaults, when I went to "Set program access and computer defaults" and
clicked on the "custom" button, it just went away. There was no new box
which
would allow me to select anything. From your post, I expected a new
selection
opportunity after selecting "custom" and clicking "OK". BUT as I sad, WM
seems to be opening attachments just fine now. Here hoping it continues!!!

This problem started yesterday after downloading IE8, I went ina d
changed
the security setttings like advised in an earlier question. This
solved
the
problem and worked yeasterday. Today when I try and open attachments
it
gives
me the error "The command failed to execute" again. I have checked he
security settings and reset the Internet settings. Still can't open
attachments. What will resolve this issue?

Go to default programs, either from the start menu or in Control
Panel>Set your default programs>wait for the list of programs to
populate>select Windows Mail and ensure that it is set as default.

Select Internet Explorer and do the same.

Also while in the Default Programs, click on "Set program
access and computer defaults." Select Custom, and
then select Internet Explorer. Then Windows Mail & Click OK.

Dear HTH, Your solution sounded good but it didn't work for me. Not
only can I not open some attachments, IE8 will not permit display of
.jpg items. About the same time that I installed IE8, I also began
experiencing problems opening previously generated documents in MS Word
2007; citing that macros had not been previously allowed. Grady
