THE COMMAND FAILED TO EXECUTE

I received the "command failed to execute" message when I tried to
open an attachment on an e-mail. Why is this? What do I have to do to open
the attachments no matther which extension has?

Have you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Is "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Vista (KB969897)"
listed in Installed Updates?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

If you do the following, does the behavior persist?

=> Start | All Programs | right-click on Windows Mail | select Properties
| Start in <=delete the value here (leaving it empty/blank) & OK your way
out.

NB: Uninstalling IE8 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) should
resolve the behavior but you should not have encountered it in the first
place if IE8 was installed properly; cf.

Same problem here.BUT,
I've never instaleld IE8.
I also tried that 'delete %UserProfile%' thing, and that didn't work.

Vista. This all started after being directed to perform an 'in-place
Upgrade' (which took hours), because my system refused to install any windows
updates.....well, it now installed the updates, (35 of 36...some *.NET thing
won't install).

Suggestions?

I did a search for "remove norton" and got a program from the Norton website
to remove Norton.

I removed my Norton piece of crap, but the problem remains.

Vista Home Premium
IE 7
Windows Mail (came with Vista)

I also can't download any files from any website now.
(I have to do it on my XP computer, then bring the files onto this
computer...and I have some "side-by-side" error happening when I try to run
the freebie AVG I tried to install after blowing away Norton.)

Windows is fun.

I followed PA Bears suggestion. First, based on past experiences, I shutdown
Spybot Search & Destroy and retried opening the attachment. Voila, it worked!
Thanks PA Bear.

I take it back. After disabling Spybot S & D I was only able to open the
first attached picture; the other 10 pics resulted in the command failure. I
restarted windows mail and now none of the pic attachments will open. I saved
all the pics to a folder on my harddrive and I am able to open them from the
folder with no problem. I am using Microsoft's Picture Viewer and I am
running IE8. This is a new problem for me; I believe (but not 100% sure) that
I was able to view picture attachments after having downloaded IE8. This
seems to be a new problem. I am running Vista Home Premium with all the
latest updates installed.

Were the Spybot Residents SDHelper and Tea Timer running in the background
when you installed IE8?

PA Bear, I am not really sure. But I installed IE8 when it first became
officially availble (a few months ago I think). I've only just now had
problems open attachments in Windows mail. Will any logs indicate the problem?

Lonnie, in your Internet Explorer, go to its Help, About...
Which version does it say you have. Sometimes IE8 gets installed
without the user being aware of it.

Can mail, mail folders, contact lists, and message rules be imported from
windows mail into windows live mail. Are POP3 accounts supported?

Why did you hijack someone else's thread with completely different issue
than yours ?
What problem do you have to start your own thread ?
In case it has not dawned on you, clicking NEW will start you a thread of
your own.

Sorry, was responding to Gary VanderMolen's suggestion to install Windows
Live Mail - sorry to ruffle your feathers t-4-2

@Jim G only:
...I installed IE8 when it first became
officially availble (a few months ago I think). I've only just now had
problems open attachments in Windows mail.

That's highly unusual: 99.99% of users seeing this behavior encounter it
immediately after installing IE8. Are you seeing this when opening
every/any attachment or just some (e.g., PPS files; PDF files)?
Will any logs indicate the problem?

Not than I'm aware of, no.

You've had another Spybot-related issue lately (albeit on your XP box):
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_frm/thread/fb1548d88efbf9fc

Is Spybot Tea Timer enabled now on the Vista box?

On the Vista box:

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What other anti-spyware applications (i.e., other
than Spybot and Windows Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Assuming you've installed IE8 on your WinXP SP3 box, are you seeing the same
behavior when opening attachments to messages in your Mail Client (e.g., OL;
OE)?

In most cases, yes, all WM data is automatically imported into
Windows Live Mail. It doesn't hurt to try it out, because if it turns out
you don't like Windows Live Mail, merely uninstall it.
