XP stops at Mup.sys

I have XP Pro and it will not boot into Windows. It gets to Mup.sys and will
not go any further.
I am attempting to do a Repair installation but it gets as far as Setup is
starting windows and will not go any further. Have tried different memory
and removed any pci cards with no difference.

There has been no new hardware installed and no software either.

Any suggestions ?
Thanks
Ron

I don't know if I had exactly the same issue but I was
doing a reinstallation of Win XP and the installation
froze at a point that sounds similar to where you hung
up. I couldn't back out or continue the installation,
leaving me with nothing.

I called MS and all they could suggest was that I do a
new installation and create a partition. I did this and
had non-stop problems. But at least I got back online.
I wish I could tell you more but to make matters worse, a
few days ago there was a power surge on our home
electrical system. Everything but my monitor were
plugged into surge arrestors. The monitor didn't risk
lost data so I had it on a wall outlet and incredibly,
the monitor started to smoke and burn when we reset the
circuit breaker on the house electric circuit box.

Now I am in the market for a new monitor, needless to
say.

I tend to digress.

Thanks for the reply.
It never ends does it.

I'll back up all the data on my other machine by connecting the hard drive
to it then do a clean install. I'll have to use a Win98 startup disak and
then use fdisk to delete the non-dos partition.

Thanks

Is your drive old? Non-stop problems indicate something
might be going wrong with the drive itself. Remember,
these things have something called MTBF (mean time before
failure). If you count up the number of hours you have
been using your drive, it may be coming up on disaster
time.

Mup.sys is normally the last file loaded at boot, and things are hanging
up as initialisation gets going.

Try a boot to Safe Mode after hitting F8 as BIOS info goes to black to
get the menu. If that loads then there is driver trouble - and primary
suspect is Video. So try again, this time using 'Enable VGA' and if
that boots, get a download of the latest driers for XP from the video
card maker's site and install them in that mode
