boot fails on mup.sys

One system in the house every so often will fail to boot on mup.sys.
What I've read so far shows no specific fix for this.
Bios is up to date; which has been reset.
PCI cards have been removed. Memory moved and tried in singles, etc.
Disabling mup.sys fails. CHKDSK /R fails.
I can simply reload Home and it will work for a while. But a fix would be
nice.
Thanks

Hi there

Mup.sys is the multiple UNC provider and is related to networking. Is your
computer on a network at all? Has it ever been on a Netware network?

Things that have been known to cause issues with mup.sys are alternative
network clients, anti-virus software (I've had problems with McAfee
VirusScan 8.0i) and even USB 2.0 cards. Sounds like you've tried to
eliminate hardware issues, though.

Do you get a blue screen? If so, can you write them down and post back to
this thread, or search for them on support.microsoft.com?

Cheers

Oli

The box has never been on a Netware network. It's on a Linksys router>Cable
Modem.
The USB is on the Motherboard only. No PCI, etc cards for USB.
When the system does this, it won't display errors. You simply boot to the
screen to load normal or safe mode.
No matter which you choose, it will maintain a reboot cycle.

Disabling mup.sys doesn't help because it is not the problem. MUP.SYS
is the last system file to load during system boot. Something is
happening immediately after that, and THAT is your problem.

MUP.SYS gets lots of blame for things that are not it's fault.

Do you have any thoughts on troubleshooting what that is?
I'm running a Seagate utility now checking the hard disk.

But other thoughts would be helpful.

Try disconnecting your usb printer if you have one.

Mup.sys is misleading; it happens to be the last file loaded, so what is
happening is something in the initialisation of the system after that.
Probably a driver, and best guess Video, so I would get the latest
driver for the card from the maker's site

I'm with Alex. As he already posted, this is usually (but not always)
related to some type of video driver problem.
