System does not boot - URGENT

Hi,

I have an XP system that suddenly will not boot up. It gets as far as
the Windows XP screen, then goes blank, and nothing. I tried to boot
into safe mode and it stopped at the file MUP.SYS. I booted into the
recovery console using the WinXP CD and tried a chkdsk /R c:\. THis
finished after quite some time and did not help. I then tried to
replace MUP.sys with the one from the CD. Same. Then I tried DISABLE
MUP and then it stopped at the file right before MUP (NDIS.sys).

Reinstallation is not an option here. Any ideas on what I can do? Is
there a way to run sfc from the recovery console?

Thanks.

So this appears to be graphics card related. Has anyone experienced
this? Is this a driver issue or video card hardware related?

thanks.

I recant my previous statement about it being a graphics issue....

In looking at the boot log for a PC that is the same model, after
MUP.SYS I got
Loaded driver Mup.sys
Did not load driver ACPI Multiprocessor PC
Did not load driver Audio Codecs
Did not load driver Legacy Audio Drivers
Did not load driver Media Control Devices
Did not load driver Legacy Video Capture Devices
Did not load driver Video Codecs

The next LOADED driver is:
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\usbohci.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\usbehci.sys

So it appears to be USB? I have a mouse plugged into USB and that is
all. I am going to see if I can find the boot log for the PC in
question if I boot in through the recovery console.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

The *infamous* stop on mup.sys! As you already found out mup.sys has
nothing to do with the error, mup.sys is the last driver to load before
the system hangs. There is no magic solution to the question, the error
can happen for different reasons and no one has a cure all for this
error. Try here and see if it helps:

Thanks for this. I did as this article suggested and reset ESCD. No
change. I swapped out with another hard drive from a machine of the
same model and this booted up just fine, which tells me it is
something with the system or drive.

Thanks.

Well, i have also tried to recopy the video drivers through the
recovery console, still to no avail.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

From bad to worse....

I printed a ntbtlog from a working computer of the same model and
wanted to get back into the recovery console to copy the ntbtlog from
the not-working PC to a floppy so I can print it out and go line by
line to find out what is wrong. Now when I put the XP CD in, the
system says setup is checking my system, then the screen goes dark and
that's it.

Any idea what could cause this?

Thanks, I am at my wits end...

I was able to get the PC to boot up to the recovery console and
compare the two ntbtlog files (working PC vs. this one).

The only difference I see is that the working PC does this:

Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Cdfs.SYS
Service Pack 2 8 24 2007 15:46:54.375
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\KDCOM.DLL
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\BOOTVID.dll
Loaded driver ACPI.sys
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\WMILIB.SYS
Loaded driver pci.sys
Loaded driver isapnp.sys
Loaded driver pciide.sys
...... so on

for a third time and the non-working does not. The last item in the
non-working PC is :
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Cdfs.SYS

The third time that this little snippet appears in the log, much of it
is the same as previous times but some is not, such as:

Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\Rtnicxp.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\fdc.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\serial.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\serenum.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\parport.sys

This never appears anywhere else where as lines like:
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\KDCOM.DLL
Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\BOOTVID.dll

are appearing three times.

Pasted below is the entire missing piece from the end of the
ntbtlog.txt file of the non-working PC.

Thanks for any help and insight.

Once again, did you do the extensive hardware testing suggested? If not,
please do so before reposting. The fact that you are getting different
errors points to hardware failure. Of course, there is no way for me to
be sure of this without seeing the machine and doing hardware
troubleshooting.

Standard caveat: Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out
suspected parts with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing
yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your computer, take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Have all your data backed up
before you take the machine into a shop.

In your first post you said "reinstallation is not an option". Why not?
Data can be retrieved off a non-working Windows installation with very
little trouble if the hard drive is physically viable.

At this point (with the understanding that I can't see the machine so
this is an educated professional's guess):

1. Retrieve data if it hasn't been backed up. If you want data retrieval
methods, let me know.
2. Do extensive hardware troubleshooting. Replace any failing hardware.
Clean-install Windows if necessary.
3. If all hardware is good, clean-install Windows.
