XP SP2 + AMD 64 = network functions acting odd??

Hey all,

I recently isntalled Windows XP SP2 on my computer. The vital specs are as
follows:

AMD 64 3000+ CPU
Abit KV8 motherboard
1 gig PC3200 DDR RAM
3 Com gigabit NIC (motherboard integrated)
AC 97 sound 5.1 surround (motherboard integrated)
80 gig Hitatchi HDD
GeForce 4 TI4400 video card
Samsung DVD ROM
Plextor 708A DVD +/- DVD RW

Network setup:
Dlink DI-704 Router (my machine is in the DMZ on this)
- xbox
- vonage
- my machine

Software of note for firewall: Zone Alarm Pro 4.5 & 5.1
Antivirus: Norton 2004

The first time I installed XP SP2, it got blue screens on reboot. System
Restore got me back up and running. It turned out that ZA 4.5 + the DEP
part of the AMD 64 don't get along. So I installed ZA Pro 5.1 and then XP
SP2 and it worked.

However once SP2 was installed, several odd things happened:
(1) Windows update fails with an error (can't recall the code, but I did
look it up in the knowledge base, and the 'fixes' did nothing to help)
(2) Remote desktop would still allow incoming connects, but refused to
connect outwards
(3) PING, TRACERT, NSLOOKUP, etc no longer resolve names

Aside of all this, the rest of the networking functions worked fine. I can
browse the web, etc..

Before anyone asks, Yes, I did a clean uninstall of Zone Alarm Pro 5.1 and
these things still happened, and the Windows firewall was completely
disabled as well.

Last night, I did a system restore back to the day before I installed XP
SP2. Everything is fine again w/ SP1 & ZA pro 4.5. I would however really
like to use SP2 and have it work properly ....

I am at a loss here really, I would like some advice if at all possible. Is
SP2, even tho it was sort of built around AMD 64 and the DEP thing, just not
working correctly with it?

Any replies appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In ZoneAlarm Pro 5.1, add windowdupdate.microsoft.com to
your trusted zone site list.
That should solve that error. I had to do the same
thing. So far for me, that's the only problem I had with
SP2.
Check the ZoneAlarm forums for help with the other
problems. They might be a similar situation.

I don't know if this is the same issue, but I also have an AMD 64 (3200)
CPU, and I got the blue screen after installing SP2. However, I have Zone
Alarm 5.1 already (free version.) I still haven't resolved my issue. What
is the DEP problem?

We usually don't top post in newsgroups ...

That being said:

THe DEP is the Data Execution Prevention (I think that is what it stands
for) available on 64 bit processors. Windows XP SP2 leaves this on by
default. So if you have a AMD 64 chip, this is on. Users of Athlon, Duron,
XP and Intel chips do not have this functionality so it is off.

Basically, it (DEP) does not let certain programs, typically viruses and
worms, write to memory locations to overflow the buffer. Thereby, it is
supposed to protect against lots of viruses and worms. However, many
companies (including Zone Labs) ignored this fact and left their software
able to write to these same locations. Now what you see is broken programs
for all of us end users to discover and are only now fixing the problem.

There is a fix around for it somewhere, you should find it if you look a
bit.

Still this topic was about my networking woes ... anyone??
