XP SP2 + AMD Athlon 64 + Zone Alarm 4.5 = Crash

George Carlin

Has anyone else tried upgrade to SP2 with an Athlon 64 and Zone Alarm?
Afer the upgrade, which does take about 45-60 mins of your life, my machine
would throw a BSOD and reboot.

After tinkering in Safe Mode, I have discover the culprit is ZA. After
doing some research on Microsofts site, the likely culprit was interference
due to the new Data Execution Prevention (DEP) anit-virus module. DEP is
supposed to work with the AMD processor to kill certain type of malicious
coded before it can affect your system. After turning of DEP in Boot.ini
(search Microsoft.com for DEP for inscuctions) Zone Alarm now works. Does
anyone have ideas how to make the two play well?

Looks like you didn't follow the Golden Rules, particularly No.7.

1. Run an updated virus scan, CWShredder, Ad-Aware, SpyBot.
2. Run chkdsk to check file system.
3. Perform Disk Cleanup (all boxes checked except Compress old files)
4. Perform Disk Defragmentation.
5. Disconnect all peripherals (scanner, printer etc)
6. Create a Restore Point in System Restore
7. Disable ALL unnecessary applications including AV. Do NOT touch any keys
during the process unless necessary.

Hi George,

Have you checked out this site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884130

It lists known compatibility or software that works differently with SP2.
