Security Center/Zone Alarm/Uninstall Issue

S

Scott

I installed XP SP2. I had all kinds of problems after
the install.
To Fix:
I uninstalled SP2. I disabled Virusscan. I uninstalled
Zone Alarm to eliminate it as a problem. Installed new
MDAC 2.8 from microsoft.com. Upgraded to XP Pro from XP
Home. (This was not a complete reinstall, but an
upgrade.) Working good now. Installed SP2 again.
Everything works pretty well.

Here's my issue: XP Security Center seems to think Zone
Alarm is still installed and active. It is not. There
is no Zone Labs folder on the hard drive. There are no
Zone labs icons anywhere. I went through the registry,
and deleted all values and/or keys that contained "Zone
Labs" or "Zone Alarm" with or without the space between
words. I thought this might get rid of any traces left
of zone alarm.

XPSecurity Center still reports Zone Alarm as Active.

Any suggestions???

Check to see if you still have \Windows\Internel Logs. This folder is
created by ZA and may still have files in it.

Here's some info I found when I wanted to do a complete uninstall of
ZA V5.
-------
Summary

I need to uninstall ZA version 4 or later
OR, I received this message from technical support

Solution

In order to perform a clean uninstall of ZoneAlarm Plus/Pro, there
is a new option available (beginning with version 4). Please make
sure that you have the latest version downloaded already, if you
plan to reinstall. Now follow the steps below:

IMPORTANT - If you have a Cisco VPN client installed, you must first
uninstall the VPN client, then follow the instructions below, and
reinstall the Cisco VPN client again afterwards. This procedure will
remove all traces of the TrueVector service, which was incorporated
by Cisco into the VPN software.

- If you wish to keep your settings, create a Backup from Overview -
Preferences before starting, and then Restore afterwards.
- Click on Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs
- RIGHT-click on Uninstall Zone Labs Security, then select Properties
- Under Target you will see the following line (the actual drive may
be different on your system):

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe"

Change it to:

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean

(add a space and then the /clean)

- Click OK to save the new command line.
- Click on Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs -> Uninstall Zone Labs
Security
- Click OK to run the uninstaller, and OK any security alerts that
pop up.
- say "Yes when being prompted for the removal of all files.
- Reboot
- install the latest version

These instructions from ZA forums:-

USE THESE IF YOU WANT TO REINSTALL THE NEW VERSION CLEANLY

1. If you are running a version other than the free version then backup your settings in ZA. If you are running the free version
then
turn off ZoneAlarm and rename the folder named "internet logs" to oldlogs.

2. Then go into the start menu and the zonelabs entry and right click on the uninstaller and select properties.

3. In the target box you need to add a space and then /clean to the end so that it looks something like this
"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean then click apply and then OK.

4. Open ZA and turn off the load on boot option, then reboot and then run the uninstaller (the one you changed the shortcut for)
This will get rid of ZA for you.

5. Go to your windows temp folder and delete everything

6. Find the folder named Internet logs and delete it.

7. Empty your recycle bin. ZA should be gone.

8. Go to the run command in windows and run msconfig and select selective startup, uncheck everything below it
and click apply then OK. Windows will then reboot.

9. Run the installer again and if it asks, select clean install.

10. Reboot windows again

11. Run msconfig again and select full startup then apply and OK.

12. Let windows reboot again.

13. See if ZA and all your other software starts up and works normally. If it does then restore your settings and then
wait 2 minutes and then reboot again.

14. If you are using the free version you will have to shutdown ZA again, delete the new folder called internet logs and then
rename oldlogs back to internet logs and then reboot windows.

15. Now see if everything is acting kosher.

USE THESE IF YOU WANT TO GO BACK A VERSION

1. If you do not have a copy of the last version of ZA you can get a copy of the last release from the release history page at
zonelabs.
http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/znalm/zaReleaseHistory.html
http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/zap/releaseHistory.html

14. Now see if everything is acting kosher.

Unfortunately if you do not have a backup database from the previous version 4 install then you probably will not be able to
re-import the new version. You can try but the differences between the two are large.

And just so you know I have been running the Beta version the whole time during the beta test, and all of my problems have been
minor.
I am not trying to make light of your problem, but if you follow the above instructions this should help you out.

If vsmon.exe is still running, ZoneAlarm is still working.
