AMD 64 restart Problem after SP2

Have a HP Pavillion a550e AMD 3400 64 bit system that worked fine
and then I installed SP2 and now whenever I do an install of a
program and a restart is required the system hangs and you must shut
down manually. Normal shutdown is not a problem. I have read on HP's
help forum that many AMD 64 bit users are also having the hanging
problem on restart after SP2 install. Does anybody have any
suggestions or additional info other than to do a system restore.
thanks garry

This is usually related to a system with an AMD64 bit processor and a video
card that requires a driver whose name is "mpegport.sys". If you have such
a videocard, then you cannot install SP2 on your machine until the
manufacturer of your video card releases drivers that are compatible with
SP2.

I have a radeon 9800 video card but judging from other users this
seems to be a universal amd 64 bit problem that all won't take SP2
update.

I have 5 computers all using ATI cards;

1. 9700 AIW pro - AMD64 3200+
2. 9600 XT - AMD64 3000+
3. 9800 Pro - AMD64 3800+
4 9800 XT - AMD64 3800+
5 9200 SE - AMD64 3000+

Not a single problem with any of them and SP2. It is not an AMD64 problem.
I have read only your post claiming a problem with AMD64. I guess your
situation is unique

Hi, I've also used two different ATI video cards with my A8V and AMD64, a
9800XT and now a X800Pro. None of them have had the issues being referred
to.....

There is no issue with AMD64 and SP2. I have 5 AMD64 computers, all of
which have SP installed.

There is an issue with certain hardware devices, mostly video cards and or
DVD Decoders, that use mpegport.sys as a driver. These are common with
AMD64 based systems *AND* Intel based systems. The issue is with the
hardware, and not the AMD64 proc. SP2 restricts access to certain areas of
memory, and mpegport.sys is written in such a way that it attempts to use a
memory address restricted by SP2 and subsequently cant start. This sends
Windows XP into the dreaded infinite loop.
Here is a link that describes the problem:

This is not the problem, the problem is not that the system
continually tries to reboot but completely opposite in that the
system won't restart like when you install a new program and the
computer says it needs to reboot for the changes to occur but it won't
reboot and hangs there and you have to do it manually. Otherwise the
computer works fine with the exception of the restart function, shut
down mode is normal.

i had same problem with hp a530n amd 3200 64 bit processor.. with nvidia 5200
video card with 128 megs of ram. the file mpegport.sys isn't found on my
system so it can't be that.

i had to do a complete recovery to get computer back in working order. i
spent 2 hours on phone with hp and 1 hour on phone with microsoft. and if
you search you will find that there is indeed a problem with the amd 64 bit
processors and sp2.

sorry about extra posting not sure why this happened.

however i see that someone with the same computer as me has gotten the sp2
to work by changing there power options to home/office. i am waiting to hear
if they are still working before i try the install again.

Hi, sorry but there is no problem with SP2 and AMD64 processors and there
never has been one. My system, as many, has worked perfectly without making
any changes. I've yet to see any posts on the AMD forums that support that
particular myth. You are possibly running older software that isn't
compatible with DEP, thus all you need to do is update....
