xp problems with .lnk and portions of programs

I had an error message come up when starting my laptop.
Didn't pay attn due to the high number of windows errors I
have seen in my lifetime. My .lnk files would not work.
Also, I cannot enter text in to Internet Explorer to do a
search. I can enter a url. Norton AV will start but that
has a split window and the window on the right is blank.
This is the portion of the window that shows you reports,
or scans, etc. System restore will not work. It opens a
window, but the window is blank. I found a patch that has
my .lnk working now but the rest of the problems still
exist. Any help or suggestions?

Since your Norton doesn't run try an on-line scan at one
