Help, desktop icons have changed to .lnk

Hi, for some reason, my desktop icons have changed to .lnk and I can't run
any programs, they have also changed in the start up menu. I have tried to
download a program to fix it, but since it is a .exe file it changes to .lnk
when I save it and won't work!!! I am no expert on the pc and would
appreciate any assistance, this thing is driving me nuts.

Nass, Thanks but once I import / save the file, the extension is not
recognised and I can't open it, HELP HELP!

Which Fiile Der?
Download on your Desktop and right click and select Merge to merge to your
registry or execute the VBs if it is Vbs file.
Try in Safe Mode.
