Virus changes EXE files to LNK files

My sons computer has been infected by a virus that has changed all his exe
file to lnk files. I am unable to open any program from the desktop or
Windows Explorer.
AVG has not found the problem nor has Adaware or Spybot.
I have done a system restore in Safe Mode, that cured the problem for one
day then it came back again.
Has anyone any idea how to fix this?
