xp pro sp2 upgrade-major problems

G

Guest

Hi, just did an xp pro sp2 upgrade. Have no network connections, no
printers, no drag & drop, no copy & paste, no backup, no system restore, task
bar and start menu were messed up for a while, and among other things sp2
won't uninstall. I can plug in the network cable and use the internet
connection though.

System restore only shows restore points after install of sp2 although the
log file shows rp's going back to number 1. It is running but I get an error
message that says system restore can't protect my computer and to reboot and
run again. It is a recurring problem.

Uninstall of sp2 stops and says that it can't find a file (or two).

I am about to get the original xp pro install disk and try to install again.
I also have an oem xp home disk with sp2 on it that was on a newer computer
I bought. I will use that if necessary.

Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance. I just want to be functional or get
back to where I was.

Followup: I tried to uninstall sp2 and kept getting a message saying the
system can't find the file specified. I tried sys restore and kept getting
the message system not able to protect cmputer, restart, and run sys restore
over.

I went in this morning and put in the original oem windows install/reinstall
disk with xp pro sp1. It would not let me load the recovery center because
it said it was the wrong version. It wouldn't let me boot to recovery center
bacause it kept asking for an administrator password and I have never used
one.(just entered through it) Somehow with the reinstall disk in, it asked
whether I wanted to reinstall windows as a new install or replace the present
system or else do a repair. I said repair and next thing I know it is doing
an install over the old sp2 system. It will be done after lunch and I don't
know what I will have so stay tuned. If I would have known it was in install
mode, I would have waited to ask you guys about this or else installed it as
a separate system. anyway

any ideas so far to help me.

GLORY BE, I am up and running. I worked through microsoft fixes 875350 and
875355. All the different ways to make sp2 uninstall or system restore work
did not work. The uninstall kept ending with the message saying the system
can't find the file specified. The sys restore always gave the message that
I went to the office this morning where my windows xp sp1 oem disk was. I
couldn't load the recovery console because the computer had a newer version
of windows. I couldn't get into the accelatered recovery system either. In
the process of trying to load the rocovery console this morning, I ended up
in windows setup. I pushed the R for repair thinking that was the recovery
console but to my horror it started deleting files and I realized that I was
into setup and reinstalling windows. Although unintentional, I went along
for the ride and low and behold I had a system that would work with all my
network, printers, and internet connections including some old ones I had
removed a long time ago. I cleaned up the internet connections and I'm
operational again. Thanks to everyone.

I did the same basic thing that was in the article d_may wrote about which
is a repair reinstall of windows. It left me with 2 new restore points and
no old ones but that is OK. I guess the moral of the story is that I will
never ever upgrade to sp2. I'm afraid now to do any updates. I did download
the IT & network version of sp2 last night but it would not install on top of
the windows update version. I would have to hear a lot of people making
guarantees that it is a better version and will work before I would try it.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the report, a clean system sometimes is the best way to go (even if it was
accidental) hence the importance of backups of crucial data.

As for SP2, as long as you do research first, then you shouldn't have problems.
Jupiter Jones has a good site on this:-
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

Also check:
Are You Ready for WinXP SP2?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=windowsxpsp2

Unfortunately, no one can give you any 100% guarantees.
