Problem with SP2 install

I have a cpr with XP Pro and SP1 and 2 installed.
Had a problem so repaired with the OS disk.
Tried to install SP2 again and it really caused a big problem.
I fixed again and did not install SP2. Have not tried SP3.

Ideas appreciated.
