Repair install and SP2 problems

Guest

I recently had to make a repair installation on my WinXP. Before the repair,
it was updated to SP2, but as I only had a Win CD with SP1, I used that one.
After the repair I had problems with network communication, so I ran repair
installation again. It seemed better at the time.

Then I tried to install SP2. After a while, the installation stops saying
(in swedish) "Access denied". No further info is given. It then starts to
uninstall SP2 but hangs.

Any suggstions what to do? I cannot leave my WinXP installation as it is,
because there is something fishy with it, explorer crashes when I open the
control panel as an example...

Integrate SP2 into your Windows XP CD..
Burn the new CD.
Repair install again.

Thanks for the reply. Yes doing a new repair install with SP2 sounds like
the way to go. But how can I integrate SP2 into a WinXP CD?

Hi,

Use AutoStreamer or nLite to make the process pretty easy.

AutoStreamer:

Create a Slip Stream version of Windows XP
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/slipstream.htm

nLite:

Universal Windows Slipstreaming and Bootable CD Guide
http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49

If you absolutely want to do the process manually:

Slipstreaming Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Thanks again for the help. I managed to do the slipstreaming and do a repair
install using the new cd with SP2. Things are now working better, except that
I don't get the network connections in the start menu. They do not show at
all.

Any suggestions on that remaining problem?

Hi,

See if registering the following DLLs helps:

From Start/Run, run the following commands:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\atl.dll

then

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\hnetcfg.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netshell.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netman.dll

Then do a reboot.

If that didn't work, please try this:

Start/Run --> cmd.exe

and then, in the command prompt, type:

netsh.exe winsock reset

and hit Enter. Follow prompts and reboot.

I've installes SP3 using the windows updates, after restarting the computer,
it couldn't get into windows again.
I've tried Safe mode, starting using last configuration ...etc .. didn't work.
I'm trying to repair it, but it asks for the administrator password.
I'm the only user for the laptop, however, i didn't set a password before.
Can u help ?
