Network problem after repair install

Guest

After having updated my processor and motherboad, I had to do a repair
install of WinXP in order to get it to start up. Some problems arose since I
only had a CD with SP1, while SP2 was installed previously on the computer.

With the help of this forum, I made slipstream and with the new CD I could
do a repair install with SP2. Things now started working better, except...

Under the start menu, I dont get any network connections to edit or
activate. I managed to get online anyway using the "Remove Access Auto
Connection Manager" service, but I need to get the issue with the missing
network connections fixed.

Any suggestions on where to look or how to correct the problem?

BTW, if I try to go via the control panel and then double-click the network
connection, the control panel hangs for a few minutes, then the network
connections is entered, but no connections are showing (not even the one to
my local network). Just an empty window. Since I am online right now, some
network connection must exist though!

After some troubleshooting, I can now supply some more information.

In the system log book, the following error from DCOM occurs :
"Servern {BA126AE5-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E} registrerades inte med DCOM
inom erforderlig timeout.". In english that is something like "the server ...
wasnt registered using DCOM within the requested timeout".

I was also able to find an article, no 825826 (in swedish) about
troubleshooting when icons for network connections are missing. I followed
that article up to the point where it requests you to do "regsvr32
netshell.dll". That command fails with return code 0x80070005. The other
files (3 in total) work fine.

What should I do? I'll be thankful for all the help that I can get!

Hello,
First here is the link in English
825826 How to troubleshoot missing network connections icons in Windows
Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825826
The error code means the path is not accessible or it is getting an access
denied.
So you may not have access to the file or the registry entry to re-register
it.
Thanks,

Some further update: I found a neat little utility call RegMon, with which I
can se what key accesses gives access denied. Using that, and modifying key
access rights, I could complete the regsvr32 netshell.dll command.

The current situation is that although the situation is a bit better, there
are still access denied happening. A dump from RegMon is enclosed below
(lokal tjänst is local service in the swedish WinXP, the others you probably
understand).

These access problems cause windows to hang for half a minute or so after
start-up. That is really annoying. Please help in sorting this out!
Best Regards
/Staffan
