Failed to query TCP/IP settings?

When I try to use the "repair" button of my network connection, I get this
error msg:
"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action
cannot be completed.
Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection.
Cannot proceed."
The only network adapter offered is the "1394 net adapter", with installed
driver.

Only the infamous "1394" is showing in the connections, and the ethernet
card is without a driver.

Because the wizard can't find one.
I apparently don't have one on the system, and obviously can't let it search
for it online, since I have no connection.
If I knew what it is I need I could use my laptop to dl it, then put it on a
flash stick and manually install on my PC.
The PC is a HP Pavilion m7763w.

Well, it didn't work.
The driver download was meant for a different model HP.
For mine they offer nothing but Vista compatible drivers.
Thanks for trying to help!

Oh yes, I went the whole 9 yards.
The trouble ( I suspect) was that it was made for different hardware.
It does eem to matter what model you have, since it may have different
hardware.
My model HP has other HW than the one that was dl'ed.

It seems that your system was originally sold with Vista Installed and
as such HP has no XP drivers for your ethernet .
Might I suggest you buy an ethernet card and install it in
a PCI slot. They are really cheap about $10 will get you a 10/100 Mbps one.

I finally chucked it in and reinstalled Vista. ;\(
May try to switch to W7 next.
Thanks to all who tried to help.
