Upgrading XP Home to XP Pro

Hello. Following a lot of good advice from this newsgroup, I am in the
process of upgrading my XP Home to XP Pro. I boot into XP Home, insert the XP
Pro CD and choose the "Install Windows" option. Unfortunately my XP Home is
SP2 and the XP Pro CD is only SP1 so I get a popup that tells me I am trying
to install an older version of windows and it doesn't let me continue (I can
only cancel). It seems that the only way to install XP Pro SP1 on top of XP
Home SP2 is to boot from the XP Pro CD. However I have some concerns:
- will this do an upgrade (and leave all applications intact)?
- is it possible that things may get screwed up going from SP2 back to SP1?
Should I give it a try or should I simply (try to) get an XP Pro with SP2
installation CD?

thanks
christos

Thier is no "upgrade" from home to pro. The upgrade is for older windows
OS.To install pro from home,install pro cd,boot to cd,select install xp,new
copy,
delete the partition (home) create one, then xp formats & does a clean
install.
If youre worried about youre files, settings, etc, run the FTW from the xp
cd,save
to new folder, move folder to cd,run as old computer to save...

Hi Christos,

You will have to create a Windows XP Pro cd slipstreamed with SP2. Or,
if SP2 was installed after the operating system you can uninstall it
(SP2) then reinstall it once the upgrade is completed. I think the
slipstream method is the best way to go. Look for post by Ron Martell
less than 24 hours ago (Re: Install an earlier version of windows xp)
for links and more instructions. You can also check this:

(if the link doesn't want to open drill it down to
http://www.icervasoftware.ca then click on Tech Tips)

Don't bother with posts by "Andrew E." or follow any of his advice, he
doesn't know what he is talking about. He just fell off a turnip truck
and rolled into these newsgroups...

There is.
I used to upgrade from HE to Pro, both no SP. but beware, after that your
computer might not recognise some hardware. but there is no way to upgrade
SP2 to SP1
You need the windows XP Pro CD, download SP2, then compile them to one CD-R.
There is a program for that, but I forgot. See John John message

You would be better served doing a clean install. Upgrades tend to be riddled
with problems.

Upgrades from Windows XP Home Edition to XP Professional usually go very
well. Your statement is false.

Hei guys, I slipstreamed a SP2 into a out-of-the-box XP PRO successfully.
Now, when I try to upgrade my original Toshiba XP Home to the newly created
XP-PRO with SP2 CD, the setup asks me for a license; I provide the 25-digit
XP PRO Box license and setup tells me the key isn't adequate, because I
should be providing a Volume License Key. I just can't figure out why setup
is asking me this. Either the original XP Home and the existing XP-PRO
versions have their own single-license keys (both are PT-language versions
too)... John
